  • If you were going to gameplan for Pernell Whitaker...

What would you tell your fighter to do? Assume that he could do what you instructed him to do. What strategy would you concoct to try and beat Whitaker, who was never beaten in his prime (he lost but I dare you to tell me that Ramirez beat him or Chavez actually tied him)?

It would be very difficult to come up with a gameplan for Whitaker. But if I had to I would try a box and move approach. Even though it probably wouldn't work either, it would be a lot better than trying to take Whitaker out. His defense (in his prime) was just ridiculous.

IMO Duran has clever enough and violent and well thought out enough offense to beat him.

Gans was versatile and skilled enough to feint him into position.

Assuming i had someone who could REALLY crack, Julian Jackson kinda crackin, and someone who could keep a Frazier-esque workrate for 15 rounds WHILE keeping that power, I'd tell him to overwhelm while going to the body more than the head.

I myself have fought guys with Whitaker like defenses (but far inferior) and a heavy workrate to the body will get to them eventually.

Another Strategy would be to fight fire with fire, and sit back and wait for him to come to you and employ a similar defense. Make him get out of his comfort zone.

A guy like Pacquiao or Pryor just keep punching and keep Whitaker going backwards. Both Pacquiao and Pryor could take Whitakers best punch and laugh and have proven they can sustain there power in the long grueling fights

Pacquiao can't deal with movement. He'd have a LOT of trouble landing on Whitaker.

And Pryor? he'd just look ****** all night, winding up and throwing those big shots. He pretended to be a decent boxer off the backfoot, but he was super inaccurate like that. He could only fight effectively going forward and throwing a million inaccurate, telegraphed punches. Good in a shootout, not so much against a tactical master like Whitaker.

          So far, I'd go with

Maybe that could work. It'd be real tricky, but it'd be better than wasting all your energy looking ****** all night.

In My mind, Duran is physically strong enough to rough around anyone at LW. He would make Whitakers grandkids wake up feeling sore from all that bodypunching.

I would follow either the Buddy McGirt or Jorge Paez strategy...actually, mix those together. Try to counter punch Whitaker and take his jab away from him, and/or have a herky jerky roughhousing style that Whitaker isnt used to dealing with.

the trick is to simply outhustle him. Meldrick Taylor actually might have a semi fair chance in that respect, just with a million super fast combos at close range. too much distance with that strategy and Whitaker would crack you with counters constantly or stuff the jab in your face though.

Whitaker doesn't have the power to even make Pryor or Pacquiao blink. Pryor and Pacquiao are both capable of throwing 80-100 punches a round and Whitaker has absolutely nothing discourage them.

Oh and it only gets worse for Whitaker against Meldrick Taylor.

Yeah, but what good is 80-100 punches a round if you're hitting air with 80% of them? It's not like Whitaker has a glass jaw, either. When he got dropped by Trinidad, it was almost like the physical impact of the shot picked him up off his feet and put him on his ass. He didn't really seem that badly hurt. You don't need a knockout to win.

And throwing back isn't the only way to keep an aggressor like Pryor off of you. Pryor never showed that he could do anything like his trademark style against anyone half the caliber of Whitaker.

And talk about no power...Whitaker at least committed to his punches. He could dig hard to the body. Meldrick Taylor is the definition of a powder puff puncher.

Its not about hitting hard against Whitaker. Landing 15 of 90 punches(Taylor would land a lot more than that) all of them power punches is better than landing 15 of 30 punches with almost all of them being jabs.
