I've always felt that the perceived "brutality" of the Tex Cobb-Larry Holmes fight has been overblown. I've watched the fight a couple of times and to me, it's not that ****ing brutal. I've seen some vicious fights in my time but this fight is not one of them. Yeah, Larry Holmes landed at will and peppered Tex's face with his sharp jab all night but he didn't land too many thudding blows that made me cringe...
Am I missing something here?...
I think that was Cosell's problem, the one sidedness, not the brutality. Though Cobb earned his way to a top 10 ranking this was as bog a mismatch as we've probably ever seen at heavyweight. And it was magnified by Cobbs toughness and willingness in his own words to "keep stumbling forward and get punched in the face". Than again, maybe Om wrong.

Cosell definitely went overboard with his criticism as he called the fight. As to the fight itself, it was a mismatch no doubt, but credit to "Randy" (as Cosell would put it) for going the 15 rounds with the prime Larry Holmes.

I agree. And Cosell turned on the sport that had launched his career that made him a multi millionaire. But it was time for Cosell to go anyways. He was becoming a parody of himself.

I always like Cosell, but I agree with this. I believe he thought that everyone else should think just like him. And towards the end of his life this was very obvious as he was a very arrogant and bitter man. I remember reading an article about him shortly after his death and they went into some detail about this. Really wish I could remember where I read it. Sports Illustrated maybe.

This is also true which makes Cobbs comments about him so comical.
"When informed that Howard Cosell quit boxing after his fight with Larry Holmes) "My gift to boxing."
"When Cobb heard what Cosell had said during the Holmes fight "I'll go another 15 rounds with Holmes if Howard will quit announcing football!"

I remember reading this as well. I don't remember where exactly but Frank Gifford made some comments about how bitter Cosell had become later in his career and his arrogance intensified it.

Yep thats it. something about being at some dinner or fundraiser and Cosell was drunk and embarrassing his wife. Does that sound right?
