It my opinion that is him at his very best. Earlier in his career he was green. Later in his career he stopped using the jab and wouldn't throw as many combinations instead prefeering to put shot or jump in with a hook. And while I still think Toney was weight drained (a discussion for another thread) Jones pull everything out of his bag of tricks and showed his entire repertoire in this fight.

Toney being mostly a flat footed fighter was made to order for Roy. But Roy was just as great in every other fight from 1992-Ruiz. Also Toney was no more drained against Roy then he was in any of his previous fights.
Also Roy stopped throwing the jab around the time he moved to light heavy because most of those guys were taller then him and the jab(which was used pretty much only for defense) would be useless when he was fast enough to land leaping left hooks against slower light heavyweights and still get out of the way of counters.

Roys tendency to enjoy fighting off the ropes would cost him hugely here. I see Hagler taking the centre of the ring with Roy moving round him. I believe Hagler is good enough to move Roy into the corners and ropes with good hard punches. Not without taking some himself and Roys combos would bother Hagler routinely throughout the fight although I believe he would get stopped somewhere around 10 too many hard shots from Hagler would cave in Jones. If Roy makes it to the end which is plausible(although I don't think it will happen) the scoring is going to be close due to him frustrating Hagler with quick and effective punching, think Oscar vs Whitaker for the kind of judging your going to deal with.
Over 15 it's a whole different story, and albeit Roy never had bad stamina, the constant punishment from Hagler would take it's toll and he gets stopped for sure.Last edited by Barn; 08-17-2011, 03:16 AM.

Roy fought off the ropes against guys bigger than him Hagler is a small middleweight and could never do what bigger men like Griffin, Del Valle, Sosa etc did. Roy would use the jab and push Hagler's head down when he got in close.Last edited by SCtrojansbaby; 08-17-2011, 05:05 AM.

Sctrojan...
Roy would use WHAT jab to hold off Hagler? Roy never used a jab, and it certainly wouldn't suddenly become a factor against the best fighter he'd ever face- who just happens to be left handed.
Roy would win by throwing quick bursts and then moving off. He'd beat Hagler in somewhat similar fashion to the way he did Hopkins, but would lose more rounds to Hagler than he did Hopkins.

tho im not sure roy tied up much, maybe i just dont remember, but he usually just hands up when laying on the ropes, although there were definite counter hooks back in the daysLast edited by SplitSecond; 08-17-2011, 07:14 AM.
