Darcy's biggest problem is dying so young, unanswered questions on how good he really was.

Honestly I don't know that much about him other than he was said to have been the greatest Aussie fighter ever. I heard of him the same way I heard of so many of the older more obscure boxers, that's by playing the Avalon Hill boxing simulation game Title Bout back when I was a kid in the late 70's and early to mid 80's. That game had all the ATGs in it and there was a bio for every old school boxer on the back of their fighter card, and I read them ALL.

Can't agree there my friend, don't call myself an expert but saw an awful lot live of both Turpin brothers and Randolph was the better IMO
A focussed well trained Randolph Turpin was a handful for any fighter and SRR used his "European Tour" as a working holiday, that's why he lost.
My father was going to take me to that fight but went with some friends from work, I still havent forgiven him for it!!!

People thought he was still unbeatable because of how great he had been. Myself, I saw serious signs of slippage in his fight with Mugabi in 1986. His movements were more lumbering, he wasn't getting off nearly as quickly/sharply as he had before, and his punches were wider and slower.

Unanswered questions yes, but not about how good he was, there were so many well known people who claimed he was the best fighter they have ever seen, every opponent he faced thought he was invincible. The unanswered parts are more about his future opponents,....and the fact that many thought he would not have been able to make the Middleweight limit by 1919 at the latest. Darcy had already destroyed the well respected Fred Fulton who had insulted the 11 inch shorter Darcy before what was supposed to be an exhibition. Darcy was incensed and pulverised Fulton who quit at the end of the second. Incidentally, Dempsey spoke about that, he said that Fulton would have destroyed Willard easily,........ Fred Fulton never recovered from those two rounds, when that news got out,... Fulton never had another big fight apparantly.,,, in my opinion, the only main question about Darcy is the names, Greb, Dempsey, Carpentier, Tunney and not many others...... Tunney also rated Darcy as a genius. Don't forget, Dempsey, Tunney, Greb and co. had many common opponents with Darcy...... As I say,... the only questions about Darcy are being asked of him today,..... Nobody who was around in the 20's, 30's. ever forgot how good he was and his greatness was never questioned until the most recent decades,,.... we should respect their opinions, especially from the fighters and opponents.

That must have been a great game,,, My interest was sparked by a very biased computer game,.... like yours it had everybody on it,.. I say it was biased, it was, it was biased in Darcy's favor, virtually every time he was matched with Hagler Robinson and all the others, The compter had Darcy winning 99 %, and by early KO's,..... I thought, who is this guy ??, many old-timers in Sydney claimed he was the greatest fighter of all time, but I suppose they would, 30 years ago some of the old blokes claimed they had seen him fight,........ but if everybody who'd claimed to have seen him fight,....... he would've had to have a million at each fight (we only had 3 Million at the time, less than NZ now)... Anyway, I posted some film clips of Darcy on the Darcy Book thread of mine, you can see some remarkable footage of him,............ it really is the best way to get to know the best fighter to ever come out of the Great Southern land.... I hope you like the clips.

Well respected men said the Earth was flat too.

For me, an opinion only goes so far without the actual evidence of how good a fighter is.

Are you sure it was Fulton?

I'm gonna dig that game out, teach myself how to play again, and have some classic/dream matches that I will blog on, I'll be sure to pull Darcy out first and match him against Hagler.

                    15 rounds or 20?

I think you had the Australian version.

Was Fenech winning 98% of bouts against Jofre?
