  • Interesting questions: Who had the better right hand, Max Baer or Marciano?

Ive been hearing things about Baers power, apparently he once hit a heavy bag so hard it came of its hinge. But then you have Marciano and his Suzie Q, but an opponent of Baers once said "Joe Louis could hurt you Max Baer could killyou". I think its a tough one

    Thoughts?

I've always thought Max Baer had the better one punch power, but that Marciano had everything else needed to be a great fighter.

Max Baer's overhand right was like a wrecking ball, but we saw his limitations and inconsistencies. I've never seen any of his fights previous to him killing Frankie Campbell, which I hear affected his killer instinct.

Baer was also bigger than Marciano, which would give him better power IMO.

One shot? Baer for sure. That right, once voted the hardest punch seen between 1900-1950 (I think it was a Ring mag poll) was simply herculean.

No question about it. Max Baer hit harder with the right than Marciano.

There is a fair argument to suggest that Baer hit harder with the right than every heavyweight in history barring Earnie Shavers. Though George Foreman might dispute this!

What makes that decision so undisputed to you?

Max was an animal, he might've been the hardest puncher ever in boxing history. He killed a guy aged 21, that says it all. Knocked his brain apart.

You mean about George Foreman mate? I suppose George does come across in interviews (these days) as very modest, but he does have a good claim to having one of the most dangerous right hands in history.

Foreman would surely crack most enthusiasts top 5 for heavyweight punchers. I'd probably throw him in at number three for his right hand power. Behind Shavers and Baer.

I think these three probably have heavier concussive power with the right than Louis, Tyson, Liston, Marciano, Dempsey, Bowe or Lewis ( who would possibly complete my top ten ).

I've probably forgot a couple of notable heavyweights with really decent rights.

I've never seen the Campbell bout. Was it ever even filmed? Not to poop on Baer but a fighter dying in the ring isn't necessarily conclusive of incredible knock out power. Rabbit punches, repeated hard but non-concussive blows, injuries from sparring or whatnot that a fighter takes into the ring with him, all these things have to be considered. Maybe none of these things was a factor, and Baer legitimately dislodged Campbell's brain from his skull, but without looking at the fight I can't be sure.

I have to say, though, that of the available footage I've seen on Baer I've never seen him land a blow as hard as that Marciano landed on Walcott, or ever seen his punches having the same sickening effect on opponents as the Rock's did. Several of Baer's opponents took multiple clean shots from him without going down, or at least without going down immediately. Marciano had generally already laid guys out cold by that stage.

Even taking into consideration the size difference between the two, I'm still going to have to go with the Rock.

Marciano wore more men down than he sparked. By a long way.
