  • Aaron Pryor's only loss vs Bobby Joe Young

Give me your thoughts on this fight. I wasn't around back then as a fan so I don't know the circumstances well. I do see that it is a very very bizarre ending. First off I still can't see that punch landing(lame effort on the broadcoast at the time) and I don't know if Pryor was too shook up to know what he was doing or if it's legal to take another knee in boxing right after you get up from a knockdown. Should the ref have started another count at that point which would have made it 2 kd's in favor of Young?

If a fighter is knocked down the referee will begin his count. If the fighter should rise the ref then stops his count. If the fighter should fall again without being punched with a legal blow. or in this case just takes a knee, the ref will continue the count from where he left off at.........Rockin'

I have a Great story that concerns Bobby Joe Young and his son several years ago.

This guy named Eddie went on one of the boxing forums asking if anyone knew the where abouts of Bobby Joe Young. He said that Bobby was his father and he would like to contact him. He also said that he only met him once and that was when he was very young. I gave out some contact numbers I had on him and I even talked to Bobby about it. He seemed very excited. I didn't hear anything more until about a year and a half later.

Bobby came to me at one of the boxing shows that I was ring announcing and said that they never made contact and if there was some way I can contact his son for him. Bobby said that he was planning a trip to Ohio and would Love to see his son. He told me that he only met his son once in his life.

I went on the web site and looked for hours and I could not find anything. Then I googled Bobby Joe Young and my name and there it was. It had the message that his son had on the forum and he also had a workout gym that he owned. I then looked on line to see if there was a telephone number and low and behold it did. This was around 12:00 Mid-Night BUT I called anyway, and I got a recorder, so I left a message with Bobby's phone number.

The next day, Eddie, the son, calls me up in tears. He said he just got of the phone with his father and they plan to meet when he comes to Ohio.

A month or so passed and I was ring announcing another show in New Jersey and I saw Bobby come in, so I introduced him. Bobby looked toward the ring and saw me so he came running down the isle. I really didn't know what to think. He came right into the ring in front of everyone and gave me a BIG hung and he started to break down in tears. He couldn't thank me enough. He said he was greeted coming off the plane and they had a surprise party for him and not only did he meet his son BUT also many other relatives he hadn't seen since he was a very young man. He spent several days with his son and as far as I know, they still keep in touch.

I LOVE these kind of stories.

These are the little things that we do for people that mean so much to them.

Yes, it's a wonderful thing when you can bring joy to someone. Here's another one that touches me every time I think of it.

I have the Boxing Gloves from the Sugar Ray Robinson's bout against Tony Riccio, and we Inducted Tony several years ago. Tony passed away in September of 2008.

About a week before he passed away I talked to him on the phone. He said he would Love to see his son just one more time before he dies, as they haven't talked in decades. I did some research and I found his son's number and I gave him a call and told him of the situation.

A week later, Tony's lady friend called me to tell me that Tony passed away. Then she told me of an amazing thing that had happened. She said that she was sitting with Tony in the hospital when a stranger walked in. Tony was in very bad shape, hardly even opening his eyes, and for a while, Tony didn't even know that the stranger was his son. They both started crying, so she decided to leave them by themselves, and they spent hours together catching up on old times. She said that she couldn't remember when Tony was as happy as that day.

Before his son left, she asked him, how did you know, and he said, I received a phone call from the President of the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame, Henry Hascup. Tony died either the next day or the day after.

Tony's lady friend, told me how grateful she was for making a dying mans wish come true and Tony died with a smile on his face.

These stories and others like it make me feel so good!
