Fair enough, but the thread says fastest hands. Ali did look faster when they fought, but I think Floyd had already started to slow down by then. I think overall Floyd has the slight edge, although he was a smaller, lighter guy.

If Patterson is looked at so thoroughly I would have to count in Roy Jones JR. as well. Neither were really heavyweights compared to the other big guys mentioned. I find Ali and Tyson for example more impressive since they had all that mass to carry as well. Also a problem with the old timers is that a lot of the film is simply sped up, not good enough quality. So therefor I can't accurately rank fast heavyweights like Louis, Patterson, Walcott, Dempsey etc. Just my thoughts.

Patterson was a HW, Jones was not. They are not close to being the same thing.

He was a heavyweight in those times, yes, but he was always around 190 lbs. The man only weighed 200lbs once in his career. I mean, all these other guys that were mentioned had atleast 20 pounds more mass to carry as well as more height. To put it short, Patterson was a Light heavyweight who fought at heavyweight. Roy was pretty much Patterson's size when he had his only heavyweight fight, and he looked like the fastest ever at that weight. So if we're really gonna be technical here, we have to include Roy Jones JR. as well.

It isn't about weight, though. Weightclasses change. Patterson was a Heavyweight by trade, that was his career. Jones doesn't belong in the same bracket.

I dunno Patterson trained for other HW his whole career, and Jones stepped up eventually. I'm not overtly saying your wrong, but I don't thinks it's so cut and dry as to say same weight makes them comparable.

One of my favorite threads...I don't say much here, but read plenty. Thanks for your input.

I'm not sure he's top 10, but I think Holmes at least deserves a mention.

Weight affects speed by a lot, especially if we're talking 20/30+ pounds or even over 50 considering some of the bigger heavyweights that were mentioned and considering the diffirent era, I personally wouldn't give Patterson any kind of major credit for having the fastest hands ever at HW. And wether you like it or not, Jones fought at HW even for a belt which makes him part of the conversation. Even if it was for 1 fight.

I disagree. Jones isn't up for HW consideration, as I see it, on the strength of one fight --- anymore than someone who makes a cameo as a background extra is part of a film's cast.
