Ranking Harry Greb above Sugar Ray Robinson. Can it be justified?

Agreed. At the moment I rank Langford above Robinson. No fighters status is set in stone.
Nearly finished rading Clay Moyles book and Langford has many great fighters on his resume and when you look at all the questionable decisions and take them into account for example when he "drew" with Joe Walcott many though Langford had the better or the preceedings.
Going to by the Greb book soon as well.

I trust you're aware of this, but there was no such thing as a decision for most of his early career. When the fight went the distance it was a draw, those were simply the rules of the time, so it wasn't unjust.

I've been reading the Greb book but it hasn't grabbed me yet. I also started the Joe Gans biography by Coleen Ay**** and Mark Scott and am loving it so far.

Langford has wins or was competitive with all time greats from lightweight to heavyweight and from 17 tears of age till 39 and half blind. I'll compare his resume and circumstances to that of Robinson any day.

Yes, questionable was definitely the wrong word lol. Had it went to decision though Langford was thought to had won with "Newspapermen in attendance reported that Sam would have been declared the winner had it not been for the stipulation that called for a draw verdict if both men were still standing at the end." So you still have to give him "extra" points for that draw if you know what I'm getting at.

That's one area bareknuckle rules had completely covered. No judges necessary.

If anything, video footage clouds judgement.

Guys like Tyson and Naseem Hamed look INCREDIBLE on film.....best ever. The record tells the true story of these fighters.

Thats a very fair point. Bias works in both directions.

                    I agree.

It was Calzaghe who first exposed Jeff Lacy....another guy who looked FANTASTIC on camera.

Robinson is the best fighter I ever saw. Greb was the best fighter I never saw
Them two and Langford has to be the top 3 IMO and I wouldn't call anyone a fool who changed the 1,2,3 order on them. To be honest by the sound of it film wouldn't be too kind on Greb as he didn't sound pretty. That said you can't argue that he was effective and it is a little unfair too penalise him for a lack of film. At the end of the day no one can log onto YouTube and see any of the 3 of them at their best.
