In 1993, was there a bigger fight than Lewis vs Bowe?

    • Not heavyweight but a Toney vs Nunn rematch would have been the biggest fight in 93 I think

For "real" boxing fans I think Toney vs Nunn 2 would have been a much bigger fight. For casual fans I think a good heavyweight fight is always the biggest

As far as how much money they would have generated, it wouldn't even be close. The first Toney-Nunn fight was on a minor PPV and likely seen by less than 100,000 viewers. Lewis and Bowe were unbeaten HBO sponsored heavyweights with a built in grudge angle, and would have been a major PPV. I have no doubt that both hardcore and casual fans would have preferred to see that match.

Yeah for casual fans things like PPV and HBO matter. Hardcore fans saw Nunn and Toney and both were considered top 10 fighters at the time(Toney was probable top 3) and it would be a guarantee exciting matchup Bowe vs Lewis isn't

Nunn was highly rated before the Toney fight, but Toney was NOT in the P4P top 3 until considerably later. And why wouldn't Lewis/Bowe have been an exciting fight?

HBO offered to make Bowe v Lewis in 93 with Bowe getting $15 million & Lewis $3 million and Lewis turned it down..Those pitiful purse offers tell the story of how big the fight was in 93 compared to Bowe vs Holyfield II which was fought in late 1993 and was shown live` on HBO with Bowe getting $30 million & Holyfield $10 million.. Looking back now some 18yrs later no fight in the last 30yrs or more would boxing fans liked to have seen than Lewis vs Bowe back in 1993 but that is because we are aware of how their careers unfolded yet we was not aware back in 93.. when Lewis got KOd by McCall in 94 he was almost completely off the radar and boxing fans was awaiting the release of Mike Tyson who was thought of as the premium heavyweight in the sport.

Do you have any proof that Bowe and Holyfield made anywhere near that much money in 1993? I'm sure the PPV did well (you can only speculate how well the Lewis/Bowe PPV would have done) but those numbers seem rather unbelievable to me.
