I'm going to add Rocky Marciano to the list. He was a nice guy who alwyas spoke well of others. Ali, Louis and many others often praised him. When asked about Floyd Patterson when he was champion, Marciano said, "Id be bragging if i said i could beat him, but i would be lying if i said couldnt."

Some of these guys mentioned, though, aren't all-time greats. Augustus & Cobb, for example. Even Patterson, the nicest fellow Boxing ever produced, was disrespected & disliked in quarters for his management's fierce protection of their fighter. Peoples' frustration with his failure to meet Machen, Folley, Williams, & a few others manifested itself with many a harsh word spoken. Patterson's decision to face Liston was based quite heavily off that response. He eventually turned the tables on the image & shunned D'Amato's advice to avoid the fight with Liston.

After losing his title, Patterson shed his protected image (both in reality, & the eyes of the public) & took on all comers, even as age began to betray his once-ungodly speed. Beating a peak Jimmy Ellis (by rights, as he was robbed in a fight which would've changed history, making Patterson the first triple World Champ at HW), Jerry Quarry, & Oscar Bonavena, all in the latter stages of his career, are very under-rated elements of his time in the ring.

Still, he was not as embraced in thought then as he is now.

Joe Walcott is another who was very popular. He had every man & his dog on his side in his fights with Ezz Charles, who was traditionally treated very harshly by the public & press alike.

My fault for not specifying "popular" or "mainstream" Its like asking "what city has the least amount of crime?" and your response is: this little town in Antartica. ???

Basically I want to know which fighter generates the most threads without getting hated on?

I personally can't see how anyone could possibly hate Joe Louis.

That's a good choice. I don't see how anybody could hate him.

At least in his homeland, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone with a bad word for Julio Cesar Chavez.
