  • Holyfield vs Bowe (I) how good was Bowe

How good was Rid**** Bowe in this fight and if he had stayed away from the refrigerator and in top condition could he have been an ATG

That was a stellar performance by Bowe. Unfortunately he never came close to matching it again.

Yes, he could certainly have been an ATG. That night he beat the best Holyfield I think I've ever seen. Evander was superb, sharp, fast, had excellent combinations, heart and conditioning.

That night really is a testiment to how good Bowe was.....or could have been. Bowe had other good nights too, but against less stellar opposition. I'd class the rematch with Holyfield (which he very narrowly lost) as a very good performance too. I wouldn't quite class him as a flash in the pan, or a one fight wonder, but his peak only really lasted four years......and he'll be judged as such.

Over 12 rounds I'd put the best version of Bowe in with pretty much anyone in history, being confident of Bowe acquitting himself fairly well.

If he had of stayed disciplined through his entire career He would be rated very high. Lewis could not of handled him and he would have beat the Klitchko's also. But discipline is an important attribute of a boxer, not all boxers have it.

If Bowe had stayed the Rid**** Bowe from that night, he and Lennox would have been evenly competing for the best heavyweight of the 90s crown. Assuming he stayed good into the 2000s like Lennox, maybe the dominance of the Klitschkos is delayed, and Bowe fights both of them.

Unfortunately, like Tyson, Bowe didn't have the mental wiring or discipline for that to ever happen. I don't want to say he wasted his talent, but he certainly didn't make the most of it.
