Beside Williams he also fought Eugene Hairston, Satterfield, Lytell, Marshall and California Jacki Wilson. He was definitely not a guy who avoided fighters because of the color of their skin.

Robinson was never afraid to fight any fighter and certainly not Charley Burley.. Burley was a very good fighter who was thought of as being able to "Last the distance" with Robinson give him a decent fight, but certainly not be able to defeat Robinson.
next you will be claiming Marcel Cerdan, Tony Zale & Jake LaMotta also avoided Burley, which cannot be further from the truth.

Ray Robinson waited 5yrs for a title fight with Marty Servo.

Lamotta did not duck Burley, the fight did not take place thats all I wanted to say.
And as for Sugar vs Burley --> read this slowly and carefully...sugar said he was too pretty to fight Burley, the fight was scheduled, Sugar made a claim in the eleventh hour the fight did not occur, thats all.
Now moan as much as you like these are the facts. Sugar made these types of claims after also as kid pointed out, and while he was in no way a ducker, he was very diffilcut to deal with.
Burley was avoided, no way what you post on the internet...is going to change years of research of other guys. Post sensibly for a change.

i aint moaning about nothing like you seem to think i am, what i am saying is that Burley was thought of as nothing more than a fighter who could "last the distance" with Robinson, "Give him a decent fight" but not someone who had a chance of beating Robinson.
It is to me "laughable" when i read on this forum how some hold Burley in such high regard that they have elevated him to a status even higher than Sugar Ray Robinson (does not get higher than that) and it is all down to this book which has been written 10yrs ago by a family member of Burley's... Get real and do your own research.

Forget about buying and reading books about boxers from yesteryear when that book has been written by someone who was not even a twinkle in their daddy's eye when the fighters the author is writing about was plying their trade... buy books written at the time or just after the fighters was active, that way you will always be reading the truth and not some made-up garbage.

To tell you the truth Sonny keep your advice for Trolls like you...I have read every kind of book that is there to read. I have read more books contemporary and historical, articles, newspaper than you have brain cells in your head. It comes forth what you know, okay...that is zero
You are joking if you say every book has to be of the same period. Then we can't read about authors writing about Julis Ceaser can we?
Burley was held in much respect back then...just becasue you can't read that doesn't make that false. Your ignorance is only second to your arrogance, the more you post the more people will know you know nothing.
Anyways my comment was not for you...So please go on in your way. Was FrankeFrank worse than you really?Last edited by Greatest1942; 11-02-2010, 04:06 AM.

i dont think theres that many books in the world
secondly cesar himself wrote a plethora of works detailing much of his life and battles as well as the multiple historians who wrote of him during the time. so a biography on cesar will be citing books from cesars time period to enforce the facts.
does burleys book have any such citations to books written at the time maybe something like burleys journal?Last edited by Spartacus Sully; 11-02-2010, 04:24 AM.
