  • Just how good was the first coming of George Foreman?

    Do we over rate him?

Frazier (who appears to be ridiculed and lauded in equal measure on this site), Chuvalo, Norton. His best wins first time around are hardly hugely stellar.

So cumbersome at times, no more so than against Ali.

Could he have coped with the educated jab of Holmes? The combinations of Louis? The hand speed of Tyson?

Of course. It's such an easy comparison to make due to their stylistic similarities.

They were like twins in the ring.

i disagree,i dont think that any of these fighters had any type of similar similarities that can be of any significance to the projection of foremans greatness, foreman is by far the best fighter the heavyweight division has ever seen,he had all the tools and did it in different eras

If that's what you think then so be it.

Foreman beats Frazier and Norton first time round. Cooney, Moorer second time around and that makes him the best in history.

        Ok then.

good enough to make an undefeated rise to the top before underestimating Muhammad Ali, one of the best on-the-spot thinkers in ring history, a loss which effected him until he later avenged it. then stopped by jimmy young after having his heart stolen by Ali and took a long hiatus. He then came back at an old age for a fighter and won by KOing dudes left and right. He won to become the oldest heavyweight champ ever. He also won Gold in the Olympics, and in event that stands through time waved the Flag, which is important because of the Black Power being present.

Frazier gets lauded by a couple people, not the whole board. Chuvalo and Norton were both excellent fighters at the time.

Slow, heavy handed with limited footwork and stamina but incredible punching power and the chin to match.

I believe Tyson and a prime Frazier would give him terrible fits.

past round 5 frazier would get to him because of the pressure and the fact frazier never stays down. something Big George said hismelf.

However D'Amata said no swarmer can get to George because of the uppercut.

I believe prime Joe would have beat Big George.

I think Foremans speed is a little underrated, and while his footwork will never be confused with Ali he was excellent at cutting off the ring.

Very overrated.I mean,he deserves credit for annihilating prime versions of Frazier and Norton. And he does deserve credit for pulling through, just when he looked to be on verge of defeat against a top ranked, strong puncher in Ron Lyle. But,at the same time,he avoided so many top contenders to pad his record with bums that this simply can't be overlooked.

Getting knocked out by arguably the greatest heavyweight of all time, and certainly one of the greatest fighters of the modern era - when he was still capable - shouldn't be held against him.But his cherry picking through the division while on the way up and while he was champion definately should.A few names and the odd top contender doesn't cut it for me.Especially when you have a record as vast as Foreman has.

Other than the select few,he usually gets the nod over most heavyweights in these mythical matchups. It annoys me when people claim that Holyfield and Tyson would have been destroyed the way Frazier was.To me,this is rather discrespectful towards Tyson and Holyield considering they both had far greater chins and are simply more skilled fighters than someone like Frazier. So that's another reason why I view him as being overrated.
