Leon Spinks defeats Ali!!!!!
Buster Douglas was a good fighter and well schooled he certainly wasn't the favorite by any means but he had fights under his belt and some good wins.
He was 32-4 at the time and had size and strength when he trained hard. Training was always the question with James along with motivation. He trained hard for Tyson and it showed when he got up from pretty tiough shots and battered Mike out of there. He never trained properly for a fight after the Tyson fight letting his weight get away from him. Good kid and when in shape a good heavyweight.

The Tyson loss surprised me but I should have seen it coming. All the trouble had outside the ring. The issues with Givins. The knockdown in sparring against G.Page. Changing trainers. I was smelling it in the air, I just didn't think it was going to be Buster Douglas!

Randy Turpin's victory over Sugar Ray deserves an honorary mention. Robinson was at the end of his European tour and probably hadn't been training like he should but still, it wasn't just the victory that was impressive but the manner in which Turpin took it.

How could Turpins win be a "huge upset" he was an outstanding fighter and the welter & middleweight Euro champ. That's not a huge upset especially when Sugarman fought EVERY week ( I think 6 weeks in a row) he was in Europe and there wasn't much "training" going on anyways. More like card games, golf and night clubs!

An honorable mention is for someone who doesn't quite get the prize but who's efforts should be acknowledged. When we're talking about 'surprise upsets' as the thread title states not the "huge upset" that's you've misquoted then Turpin's victory deserves a mention.
Yes he was a very good fighter and you are quite correct it wasn't a "huge upset" (5-1/4-1 on the odds) but it certainly was surprising. There's a big gulf in class between EBU and world level and as other British fight fans will attest the lad from Leamington beating the great Sugar Ray Robinson is right up there as far as glorious surprises go.

"What is the most surprising upset in the history of boxing"?
Sorry but your in need of some direction, this wasn't about "honorable mention"
To be honest I'm in shock that the Brits didn't declare that date as a national boxing holiday. It is easily the biggest win in their boxing history.
It's a shame that Turpin couldn't survive retirement but it happens to some of the very best talents. Being the best at what you do doesn't last very long for some and to then become an average working man is impossible for some.
"The ring is most times the safest place"..............
