The best today look just as good as fighters from the forties to me.
In general though, there was more depth further back.
Get your eyes fixed. Find any 6'7 guys who weigh 250 lbs who move like Wlad does...get back to me. Find anyone with a body like Holyfield? Vitali? Get back to me.
How did boxing so significantly change? How did boxing technique get any better? The only thing that's changed is nutritional programs. Hand speed can't be taught. So fighters are stronger, who cares? Speed fighters have always given stronger guys problems.
Sugar Ray Robinson & leonard & Sweat Pea would beat Mayweather.
Marvin Halger, SRR, Monzon would kill Pavlik or Martinez.
Even SRR would destroy Calzaghe and would beat any of the super six guys even though Green & Dirrell are still green. A prime super middleweight Toney & Jones Jr would too.
Wlad has a terrible chin. So power is his weakness, not to mention Joe Louis had incredible speed too, he's a nightmare for Wlad or Vital for that matter. Size don't mean ****. How many countless times in boxing has a smaller guy beat up a bigger guy?

You are talking purely about heavyweights. Heavyweights have got bigger. Nobody denies that. You think that's the end of the affair?
"Are today's fighters better than the fighters from the past?"
"Yes, because no heavyweight had a body like Holyfield or Vitali."
Cut him some slack.....David Haye has quick hands.
No he is not as fast as Muhammad Ali,but there are not that many heavyweights faster than Haye.Maybe Larry Holmes and Micheal Doakes.I can't think of many more?
I agree with the TS somewhat. I wouldn't say every single fighter is better than the ones back then but for the most part, alot of the top dawgs from current eras would survive and beat the guys back then.
Things change. Science changed. Nutrition changed. All which contribute to a better athlete. Stronger, faster, bigger. With the addition of technology, you can even get a athlete with a higher sport IQ.
Then you add that the things they did back then aren't neglected. They are analyzed and the un-essential is hacked away and what worked is kept and then built upon to make it better.
So yes, many athletes now are better than their predecessors. It doesn't mean every single one is better than past but top dawg to top dawg, yes it is. None of this "give them the technology of now" ****, because that only proves my point. Things changed.
The only sport that I find that doesn't acknowledge this fact is boxing. Which is why I say, the only sport where athletes get worse instead of better is boxing.
