I think he was a short **** stuntman whose badassery is highly exaggerated by a sea of internet ******* who grew up on kung fu flicks and collect nunchucks, despite the fact that he'd never been in a real fight in his entire life, and the fact that he was, quite literally, KTFO'd by an asprin.

I also think threads about him don't belong in the 'boxing history' section.
I very much enjoyed the teachings and the movies of Bruce Lee. But your last comment is 100% correct and this thread should be locked.

Any discussion I've ever had with anyone who knew him or knew of him that I respect always held him in high regards! I was told that he brought a sophistication to street fighting and he was challenged because of this. That he wasn't an exhibition fighter and had no interest in tournements because of the rules would hampered his particular style!
I've never understood the hatred that this man gets, from the scenes in the movies and his videos as a teacher he looks in incredible condition. He has unbelieveable control of his body and obviously has a thought process that very few people could relate to. I don't know much about the Martial Arts other than knowing a proper technique when punching. Positioning and leg kicks are the opposite balancings a boxer would use so it never interested me!
I thought the guy was terrific, great hand, feet and body speed and had to have generated power with that technique! Ray.

It always makes me laugh when I hear kids cussing about what they'd do to a certain fighter or calling someone who isn't in front of them a name!
Its also funny when people who think they know something about boxing and/or contact sports have no idea what technique is and how it neutrolizes size and strength.......................and big mouths that spew garbage hahaha!

Every little person talking **** about Lee on this thread would cry if he was in front of them and you know thats true! Its still funny to hear them yak like little girls! hahaha!!!! Theres something about kids that bothers me!

Ray, what do you think of MMA? (Bruce Lee is considered to be a sort of Godfather of it)

I am a martial artist for what it is worth.

There are incredible misunderstandings about Lee. First off, any exhibition fighting he did was to test an aspect of his art, he never was interested in being a fighter so much as a teacher. His theories were, for the time, superb. Naturally they seem dated now because his ideas have become part of the mainstream. His interest in creating a unified theory of the arts with modern physical principles to reinforce technique is the standard now.

Now lets look at some of his ideas in the context of how a Martial artist sees fighting: First off in martial arts the fight starts way before the monkey dance (the posturing, pushing, setting up, etc)...Your technique has to be done and finished in seconds, not 3 minute rounds. You have to consider weapons, the use of the body as a weapon...i.e. no gloves on, headgear, etc.
Lee's understanding of the arts incorporated these conditions which is why he emphasized the straight lines of a fencer (the tao of the Jeet Kun do) the short punch of Wing Chun and low line kicks. His grappling theory was still being developed when he passed away...Gene LeBell, another great martial artist was working with him.

OK so now lets address some of the stuff on this thread shall we:

to the poster who said "Bruce Lee was great at Karate." wow! then he was phenominal! being that he was great at something he never studied!!

Mike Tyson versus Bruce Lee.... When Mike unloaded on Mitch Green he screwed his hand up worse than Greene's face. Lee would not confront Tyson in a direct way probably prefering to use a weapon, a technique requiring reach, or to simply evade because martial arts is about survival not winning! But be rest assured Lee would break a sternum before he would break his hand on someone's head.

I studied with some guys in Oakland who came up with Lee, he was a good guy, very fast and he liked his parties!

Lee was a philosophy major....He was a great teacher and not a great fighter necessarily. He did not train to fight in a ring...

Yes....Back in Oakland in the day, the chinatown area in Oakland was very gritty. It was common place for Chinese with a chip on their shoulder to go to Lee's dojo and fight with him. I came up in a similar environment in Baltimore...the door of the dojo was always open and people often would walk in and fight with us....Many would thank you profusely, with their jaw half hanging off because they had learned something. In martial arts the cost of this knowledge, often enough, was paid for in the currency of pain and brutality, but, it was a lesson learned never-the-less.

I don't condone what is called a "gung shou" i.e. a fight til one cannot continue, but I understand it...especially when I hear these little girls drop names on people that they would **** themselves if they were in the presence of.
