There is a good chance that Jones-Johnson would of played out the same way ,even if Jones had got past Tarver II. Maybe with Johnson winning by UD instead of ko
Exactly. And i wouldn't be suprised.

IMO it would have played out the same way as the first fight, but with Roy having a little more success; i'd imagine a close UD or SD.

I think Roy learns more from their first fight than Tarver does.

while we're on this topic: i think Roy doesn't get enough respect for taking this fight - he didn't have to give Tarver a rematch at all but he did. And props to him for going back in a 3rd time after a KO loss.

I was one of the guys who thought Roy justly deserved the first Tarver fight, he was post prime though and had obviously lost something with the weight draining post Ruiz.

He also looked pretty good early on in the second fight, I think he was planning to wipe out Tarver early as he had Griffin (after having a difficult first fight). Were it not for Tarver's excellent counter I could see Roy doing very well for a few more rounds, but I can see the poor guy tiring after his early fast pace. Could Tarver have stopped him late? Possible but less likely, could he have nicked a close decision this time? Probably, but only because I could see Jones gassing. If Jones fought the second fight at a more sedentry pace I'd favour him to nick another decision.

But I think Johnson's fitness would always be Roy's undoing at this stage in his career had he beat Tarver second time.

In the third fight a few years later Roy seemed finally to be 'fairly' comfortable with his weight again, but lacked the confidence to engage on a regular basis. When he did though he did show terrific flashes of brilliance. But I guess the Tarver and Johnson KO losses would knock anyone's confidence.

Prime Jones vs Prime Tarver would surely be a landslide Jones decision win.

Yeah in III he did have fantastic glimpses of the younger Roy, I think it's round 5 where he looks supreme again. Maybe the last time he really looked his old self.

"Alright guys, I gave you the instructions in the dressing room, do you have any questions?"

"Yeah, I got a question. Do you got any excuses tonight Roy?"

              BLAOW!

IMO the 1st tarver fight is way underrated because of what happened in the 2nd fight.

Poor Roy just couldn't keep that sort of momentum of round 5 going at this stage in his career.

He did show some supreme skills against Jeff Lacy too.....that was his last moment of greatness for me, obviously against poorer opposition than Tarver though!
