  • Larry Holmes VS Joe Louis

What if Larry Holmes and Louis met during their primes, who would win?
    Thanks.

Larry Holmes would win this to my mind. He'd complete the job that Billy Conn Started.

Other technical boxers such as Tommy Farr and Joe Walcott (albeit post prime for Joe in Walcott's case) were able to outbox Louis in several rounds. Larry was taller, faster, greater reach and had a better chin than all of these guys.

I'd go for a clear decision for Holmes.

Regarding the Holmes' chin I read that 5'10" white boy Nick Wells stopped Holmes in the amateurs (with headgear and more padded gloves) twice : once in the 1st round and once in the 3rd round.
But as Louis was put down against much smaller men , I think it will be a tough fight for both , and I don't want to pick a winner here.

Exactly - repeat of Conn, only bigger, stronger, more reach, and no mistakes.

Hi Frankenfrank, the amateurs show up some very interesting results. In Ali's biography he claims to have been stopped in the second round the day after losing his ******ity!

As heavyweight boxers go, I'd rate Ali and Holme's chins as easy top ten entries.

You've always got your favorites Sonny.

Its funny that prime Louis didn't KO Farr or Conn in seven. You'd have to admit that in every department Holmes has these guys beaten.

Louis had severe problems with scientific boxers who could hit and move well.

Sugarj ... i know you are a huge fan of Larry Holmes but c`mon mate, no way does he beat Joe Louis, Tommy Farr was as tough as nails and Billy Conn was a class-act a great scientific boxer... Larry Holmes was good but his greatest career victory was a disputed split-verdict over an old Ken Norton.. Holmes did not have the best chin in the world and was put on the canvas by some very mediocre fighters who had very limited skills in Shavers, Snipes, Weaver... Joe Louis would have crucified him KO7

All I know is that if Louis got to Holmes with a right hand like Shavers and Snipes did, he would finish the job.
