How good do you think Ray Robinson was.......

I have learned to base fighters on how dominant they were in their era, not how they would fair in head to heads with fighters from other era's, and it seems to me that Ray Robinson was something exceptional when you consider his record, how dominant he was in his era, lets talk Ray Robinson, give examples of why he was so great.

Astonishingly brilliant. Could do it all, and his resume shows that.

The deal about Robinson is that he scores highly in pretty much every category. The record, opposition fought, longevity, accomplishments, dominance, ability. Unlike on Harry Greb, Sam Langford, and to some extent even Henry Armstrong, there is also enough film of Robinson to make up your mind on how great he was head-to-head, against boxers from other eras. I don't see many, if any, welterweights beating him. He was a terror at middleweight also, taking on a strong group of challengers while past his physical prime. His skills were polished through the experience of hundreds of fights, although he was more so an offensive fighter than a defensive artist, looking for opportunities to score a knockout with each punch thrown. He was fast and had one punch KO power in both hands and was a great finisher when he had his man hurt due to his pin-point accurate combinations which always seemed to find his opponent's chin.

He had the heart of a true champion as well, even up to 45 years of age he lasted the distance.

Just think about this, during Robinson's first year as a pro, at 19-20 years of age, he defeated reigning lightweight champion Sammy Angott (at 135 in a non-title bout), unbeaten 42-0 future welterweight champion Marty Servo and former welterweight champion, experienced veteran of 150 fights Fritzie Zivic who was coming off a robbery of his title against 'Red' Cochrane, who never gave Robinson a shot at the title because it was felt that Robinson vs Cochrane would have been a mismatch, in favour of the challenger Robinson.

He also would have been Light heavyweight champ if he didn't get exhausted due to the heat against Joey Maxim. I believe Great A has it on YT and other people have uploaded it.

The whole fight is on youtube in HD. Robinson went on his bicycle in that fight against a far bigger man. It wasn't Robinson's usual style but it shows that he could defensive-minded and difficult to hit when he wanted to be. Unfortunately the heat got to him as it did to referee Ruby Goldstein. He made Maxim look bad, but Maxim was a good boxer, see for example Maxim's fights against Bob Murphy and Freddie Mills which are also on youtube.

Not exactly. My money's on May in that fight so to say x100 is a far stretch.
