It was real huge, I was following the round by round scorecards on the internet while watching on TV the slightly delayed broadcast.
Dela Hoya won 5 of the first 6 rounds and I thought, Oh my, I was picking Tito to win, then I felt better seeing Trinidad swept the last three rounds, AP had it 115-113 for DLH. 1 or 2 difference means it could go the other way on the judges scorecards so Trinidad deserves the close decision.
I was in high school at the time and people were talking about the fight. It was the biggest fight since I've been a fan for sure, both undefeated in their prime and on top of p4p list. It was almost as big as a Mayweather Pacquiao fight would be only but Trinidad wasn't as well known as May and Pac are so they get an edge.
i thought when i typed the fight of the decade it was wrong. but o well to bad it didnt live up to the hype everybody just talks about the decision instead of the actual fight itself.
very big that didnt live up to the hype but truely a great fight even tho Oscar was robbed. im from Puerto Rico but hey math is math if he won the first 7 than ran for 5 7 is more than 5
Like mentioned that fight would have been a monster and possibly done better than Mayweather-DLH if it had the type of promotion Golden Boy does. It was a big, big fight.
Think Oscar won, but it's not the first time judges have penalized a fighter for running and it won't be the last. Far from being exhibit A of a robbery.
It was a huge fight and highly controversial and is known as grade A Las Vegas robbery, as it was clear to everybody that Oscar had won the fight.
DLH already had the Decision by the 10th round but miraculously Tito won. I can still remember Tito crying like a baby girl and when he heard his name, the look of shock on his face was worse than the look of shock on mine, as I'm sure he and his corner were aware he had clearly lost.
One of the worst decisions in fight history.
A historical fight for many reasons and the pre fight hype was comparable to that of any huge fight in history.
It wasn't a good decision, but I wouldn't go that far.
I was 16 and i remember it very very well. The buildup was huge, Trinidad was a huge crossover star, unlike Cotto he just had a charisma about him and his actions in the ring were more flamboyant, everyone loved him. Mexicans only allied with oscar to not side with trinidad. It was huge, everyone knew who they were, out here in california everyone was talking about it
I had recently been released from a juvenile detention center so i was on house arrest when this fight happened it was one of the highlights of my life.
I remember my mother being dissapointed with the Trinidad win even though she is from puerto rico, she felt oscar won and he was robbed. My mom loved oscar.
It was huge, 2 young undefeated in their prime knockout punchers with crossover appeal fighting each other with basically all the welterweight marbles on the line, both of them were given pound for pound consideration as well. All in all, a huge fight.
