- - 14th defense of Lar not exactly scintillating stuff of greats. More like pheeww as he entered into his 12 rd title defense blues. Could get 100-1 odds the two WBA guys fighting then were massively rated over Lucian who seems to be at least game for a beating.
Holmes made his pro debut in Scranton ten years earlier, for which he was paid 63 dollars. "All during my career I wanted to return to Scranton to defend my title," Holmes said. "This fight is for the people of Scranton. This is the homecoming fight."
A capacity crowd of 6,700 paid $700,000 to see the fight.
The fight was shown live on NBC.
Holmes won every round against Rodriguez, the European Heavyweight Champion and the 9th-ranked WBC heavyweight contender.

Unofficial AP scorecard: 120-107 Holmes.
Champions of old always got an easy one between tough defenses, especially if it's a home coming.
I think you're a touch hard on Holmes, I agree he's not as great at the 'experts' like to claim but probably not as bad as you feel.
He has become the go to guy to show you know more than the casuals; to show your mastery of boxing technique via yet another brilliant evaluation of his jab.
DIGRESSION: Sometimes a home coming fight can be a bad suprise: See Benvenuti-Monzon; Zivic-Cochran.
Boxing's version of a trap game (a trap fight).
P.S. I realize Zivic was out of Pittsburgh but he made his name fighting in Newark. He and Burley tried a home coming fight, Two Pittsburgh boys come home. Like all things Burley the fight tanked at the gate. But the Zivic-Cochran fight packed a minior league ball park in Newark.

- - Pep, Lar was coming off a shut out of Cobb who made him work hard by using his face to break Lar's hands that was unsuccessful. Instead Cobb broke Cosell in one of boxing's finest unexpected theaters of comedy that could be had.
Surely for his homecoming he could respect his hometown more with more credible opponent. His next opponent was Baby Tim who whooped him in the public eye but couldn't cop the decision. Had Tim been chosen for his homecoming, we'd soon see just how beloved Lar was in his hometown. I realize Scranton ain't the big city, but it's the intersection of two US highways with a string of smaller towns along that routes. Surely a bigger venue could've been found.
The math works out to $105/per ticket average which is a bit steep for the 80s I'd think.
Arum took l'l Floydy to Grand Rapids for his homecoming after a series of big wins and the little feller couldn't draw flies. He never went back.
Back under your bridge, troll. Come back and post your garbage under your real account. Until then shut the phuck up, sit the phuck down, and know your ******** role, bltch.
