  • Roy Williams

Can anyone tell me anything about a boxer from St.Kitts in the Caribbean named Roy Williams. He is now retired but was apparently a champion boxer a back in the 1980s , either in that area or possibly in England. He won a Lonsdale belt as i understand it.

Thanks for any help you can give or if you can refer me to any site where i might do some followup inquiry.

You are talking about Roy Gumbs not Roy Williams... Roy Gumbs was born in St.Kitts and campaigned over hear in England during the 70/80s he was a very good fighter who won the British & Commonwealth Middleweight Titles winning a Lonsdale Belt before losing his titles to West Hams Mark Kaylor in a brutal fight.. Roy Gumbs was good enough to beat the very tough Frankie Lucas and lost a decision to a young Tony Sibson in the 70s... Hope this helps you find more info on him.

i also have a couple of his fights on VHS

That was Roy"Tiger"Williams a Heavyweight from the USA who was a very decent fighter and who is now doing life imprisonment for murder.. The only time he ever fought in Britain was in 1973 when he lost a decision to Bradfords Richard Dunn.. He was Muhammad Ali`s chief sparring partner in Zaire for Ali`s fight with Foreman

Thanks very much! Do you know where i could get more info on the Lonsdale belt, either generally,or specifically re :Roy Gumbs? I am trying to get some feel for the value of the Lonsdale belt if one or more were available in the open market. I will also google Roy Gumbs for more historical info on him. Sounds like he was a great fighter in his time. Thanks again.
