How great was James Toney

Toney was a great fighter skillwise but his inconsistency and his lack of discipline cost him. Also I must raise the question about his steroid use, I mean he got busted twice for using steroids. The first time I can understand because of his injury but then he got busted again for using steroids, I wonder if he used it regularly.

Saying that though, there's really no denying his skills as a fighter and on his best night he would probably give anyone throughout history a tough fight whether he won or lost.

Toney is a strange one, he has had a long and pretty successful career but I always kind of feel a bit cheated by him

Not as great as he's made out to be.

B-coz...lol, see the pun? B-coz B-hop? Anyway...I just don't find him worthy to be mentioned among other legends, he fought at a much weaker era than Hagler and Monzon for instance.

I think he may have very well used steroids regularly during the second part of his career as a cruiserweight/heavyweight. Not really when he was a middleweight/super middleweight.

I tend to believe that too but you never know.

He was too inconsistent and that's why you don't hear about him among the greats. A fully trained and no burger king Toney would give everyone problems.

I haven't made my top 100 ATG list yet, but I know Toney's definitely on it. I'd estimate at around 75. He however had the talent to be top 30. He should have been the Floyd Mayweather of his day, but training, conditioning, and motivation issues ruined it for him.
