Why I've come to respect Rocky Marciano so much (and it's not about 49-0).

You sound like Rock was a real cutie pie, out defending and outwitting opponents.

I think what you are doing is trying to compensate for what you feel is a lack of appreciation for the Rock. But it is disrespectful to exaggerate when none is necessary as if it were. I think next you may tell me he was very graceful but kept it hidden well to lure opponents in. You may have already!

I always felt one of the more impressive aspects of Marciano is what he managed to do with such a basic tool set.

Dempsey, as I am sure everybody around here knows, had nothing good to say about Rock's fighting ability. About all he could compliment about him is that he was a great guy. Dempsey felt any top fighter from previous eras would have handled Rock. He named several. Tunney was one of course.

I'm not the only one who mentioned this. Cus d' amato did too. and TBH I copy rock in the ring myself and boy does it ever work (it's gotten me pulled out of the ring before) . it's a real clever skill. all you have to do is watch the shot that actually takes the guy out. Usually a highly leveraged laser beam. the rest of it is play fighting. i've even seen him back up on purpose while his opponent pushes him. Marciano's only game plan was to line up a homerun on your head.

I've been going off about this for about 2 years now (half the forum hates me for it). I'm telling you Rock is one of the best fighters to ever do it. He's the calmest - most dedicated fighter of the modern era.
I'm sorry Apples, the above is pure hero worship, and fantasy.

In due course I intend to present a detailed account and create a thread that unpacks these ideas thoroughly.

I will also speak to how I have sought to embody this philosophy in the gym, testing it against ranked amateurs and professionals alike. What some may call hero worship is, in truth, the product of long observation and personal application.

I await, with patience, but not without longing, the day I might step onto the stage and give form to this vintage style I have spent more than a decade refining. It is my quiet hope that, through performance, I may persuade a few thoughtful observers. At the very least, the practice has proven a joy in itself.

          To answer this:

it is not in my personality to do something like this. While I may sound ungrounded - I am generally quite a detached person. It comes across as hero worship - I assure you it is not. Rock is a master of subtlety.

his style is not graceful - and this is why I use words like cunning and clever not high IQ or ring generalship. Its all in how he presents himself.

Detached? Perhaps from your senses, lad. A master of subtlety is about the weirdest supposedly sincere statement I have ever seen on a boxing forum. Do you actually believe you are convincing anyone of this tomfoolery?--That Marciano was quick, clever and full of strategies and traps?

Conclusion: you are not for real but playing games, thinking up and then saying the most bizarre and outlandish propositions you can dream up for entertainment purposes. Even that is a more subtle strategy than Marciano ever had. Love ya anyway

Bronson holds firm, proud keeper of the creed,
That Marciano was brute, all muscle, no heed
For craft or cunning, just fists and fire,
A hammer swung with animal desire.

He scoffs at talk of timing, calls it lore,
No measure, no feint—just a brawl and a roar.
He laughs at slips, at pivots, at defense tight,
Blind to the shadow that dances in plain sight.

But history, dear Bronson, is not so kind
To views that leave the richer truths behind.
Beneath the storm, a pattern starts to gleam
A trap is set, a rhythm, a scheme.

Marciano, savage? Yes but shaped like stone
By discipline, not chaos, not rage alone.
Each step a choice, each blow a thread well spun,
The slaughter masked the calculus - it always had begun.

So rant on, Bronson, plant your stubborn flag.
Truth marches past while you sit back and wag.
And though you scoff, the film does not lie
There was method in the madness, and sharpness in the eye.

                    The poetry is pretty decent.

I'm not ranting, I'm just not buying this stuff about Marciano purposely missing and looking bad,he missed because he was often wild and inaccurate with his punches.
You don't miss shots by a couple of feet and fall over on purpose!
                      That's just BS.

was as I had figured he was just a street brawler," Joe Louis talking about Marciano.
"I'm not kidding myself ,I know what I look like out there"Marciano
