I find it hard to believe a ref would willingly let that go on
I find it totally believa a man caught up in the moment would hesitate. Reffing a fight seems a simple thing to do until you're in there. It's easy to throw stones from the outside.

The ref was Ruby Goldstein not one of my favourites .Goldstein was criticised for stopping the 2nd Robinson v Turpin fight too soon,made a complete balls up of the 1st Ingo v Floyd fight,and was too late stopping the Paret tragedy.
Goldstein refereed one more fight after the Paret one, Luis Rodriguez v Holly Mims 2 years later.

Paret had previously taken a bad beating from middleweight Gene Fullmer,and there is speculation that beating contributed greatly to his death.

Here is the fight report.Fullmer himself in a taped interview said he thought the punishment he handed out probably caused Paret's death.

"In this grueling battle, almost every punch would be thrown from the inside, with the boxers' noses mere inches away from each other most of the fight.. Fullmer, the world middleweight champion, continually came forward while Paret, the world welterweight champion, fought much of the fight with his back against the ropes. Throughout the early and middle rounds the fight was very close, with both fighters having their own rallies and both faces becoming more disfigured. In the tenth, Fullmer's solid shots finally had an effect and Paret went down early in the round. Referee Krause mistakenly gave Paret a standing eight count even though this had been ruled off before the fight. The fans booed, and even Paret looked upset that this had been given. After the knockdown, Fullmer came at him, but Paret came back with one of his best rallies of the fight. This slightly stunned Fullmer but not enough to wobble him, and afterward Paret looked spent. Fullmer landed 7 unanswered rights to the head before one more to the body and Paret went down again. This time Krause gave no standing eight count, and Fullmer came in to finish the job. He landed two more punches to the body and then one huge right to jaw that put Paret down for the 10 count. Fullmer stated afterward that this was one of his most gruelling fights. Paret appeared to have swelling above and below both eyes by the end."

Yes he did play possum a lot, still both the ref and the doctor deserved to be trapped in a dark alley with a piss*d off Sonny Liston.

No IMO it was the f ucking doctor who was a joke. Spent ten minutes smacking Paret in the cheek, as if that would have helped. What an idiot that doctor was.

About the ref: No doubt he screwed up but there is a slight mitigation one can offer.

Paret was known for playing opossum and earlier in the fight (maybe the sixth round) he did just that and suddenly came off the ropes and KD Griffith, almost turning the fight around.

So I think the referee might have been hesitant for fear of jumping in too early.

But of course that can't be the whole excuse because the beating went on much too long for that excuse to work.

Today, playing opossum is out. Try it and the referee will stop the fight.

I wonder how much of that is due to Paret's death.
