  • ATG Weleterweights vs Duran

Just who at his best could Duran have beaten or at least given hell to at welterweight at their best? It is probably a shorter list to name those who could beat Duran.

Hearns at his best and behaving has a big edge already proven. He wins. Duran would not normally beat him or best him in a series.

Do you see others Duran is not likely to have bested?

Duran is a tough go for anyone. Besides the obvious choices I think Pernell Whitaker gives him fits much the way Leonard did in their second fight. I don't know that he wins, but I could definitely see him frustrating Duran.

Another I've thought about (and who hardly ever gets talked about around here) is Carmen Basilio. Great pressure fighter with underrated skills and tough as nails. His hands being held low may be his downfall, but what a fight it would be!!

That list is A-1 list. I agree with it all.

Gavilan is another one who could possibly give Duran trouble or a whipping by decision. No one near his own height ever gave prime or near prime Duran big trouble. The Kid was tall. Not saying that is a qualification though. Between Duran and Basilio both men get the fight they want on paper, or at least think they do.

The Hearns fight was fought at 154, and Duran had an off night. If we are pitting the best version of Duran at 147 (arguably the version that beat Leonard) it could be a different fight for Hearns at 147.

Ross, Robinson, Zivic, Napoles, De La Hoya, Whitaker, Pacquiao, and Crawford all give him a tough fight. I think Ross, Robinson and Manny would be the most competitive. Robinson would be the overarching favorite.

I actually wouldn’t be so certain Hearns cleans Duran up at WW. Its all really circumstantial.

              Duran was a fickle character

the Duran that fought Leonard the first time is not the Duran that fought Hearns at 154

Duran that fought Leonard had something to prove - was in great shape both mentally and physically

Duran that fought Hearns was fresh off a 15 rnd split decision loss to Hagler - who had stopped everyone up until he met Duran. Duran figured himself invincible.

The back story is Duran didn’t even prepare for Hearns its a fight he totally didn’t take seriously.

he could easily compete with Hearns in the ability department - in the few short rounds he had with him this is actually true. What he couldn’t do is stand straight up and take a flush shot from Hearns like he’s iron man and this is what he thought.

I won’t say he certainly wins - but the early knockout loss to Hearns that night is no way an indication that Hearns dusts the best version of him at 147. Duran is simply a better fighter than Hearns. He just made a poor judgment call.

                - - Best to best, potentially Duran beats every welter existent in history, but that's not how careers turn out, so maybe a short list like Hearns, Leonard, Langford, Robinson, Manny,..

Duran at his best at welter is a tough fight for any other ATG welter. It becomes a pick em when we get the proverbial short list here.

True the two Durans will not be the same fighter, but I have read claims Hearns was the only fighter manos ever feared and thought he could not beat.
