Thanks sensei. And I saw what you and the Hagler guy said about me while I was gone and read posts offline. So also thanks for the support. They couldn't silence us forever. Enjoy hearing your boxing and martial arts knowledge on here. I bet the challenges in your dojos were probably a lot like the ones that the Gracies encountered in their time. Maybe even Bruce Lee's students.
The Gracies are well organized and kind of make things work for them lol. We had tourneys that became brawls... I well remember the promoter had to fire a gun in the air to stop things lol. It was a real trip.

Holy crap dude, that's terrible. Did that happen to you or was that something you heard about?
The clubs decided what they would do was "organize" the process and I was involved with that. basically Sensei #1 would call up Sensei #2 and say they wanted to pay a visit... Kind of looked a bit like "gangs of New York" lol... kidding... But we would line up according to rank and profile and we would each fight an opponent. I actually made my bones by catching one of their star guys with a spin kick.
I mention that because this is where it gets interesting: I won that fight and the other club had to make a response. They put me in with one of their old time, slic, excellent fighters... What was I supposed to do? This separates an art from random violence Anthony. I don't truly know how I would have faired if I went hammer and tongs... I was pretty damn good, but so was the veteran I was facing. But my place became to keep order, so what I did was make a decent enough effort and let him sweep me. We both understood what happened and I made a new set of friends that night... It was my place to make sure things did not go full rtard so to speak lol, and I did so by yielding to the superior teacher.
Its gone now... but so are the great fighters I came up with. People bounce around, we never bounced lol... You lose a lot when people get softer that is just a fact of life.JAB5239 likes this.

I was in Baltimore and the martial arts clubs that were local were like "Tongs" lol. Even the names... My club was the assassins, you had the Avengers, the Champions, etc. A couple of times when I was teaching for Sensei, someone came in and thought they found a mark because I was a white boy lol. But they did not push it and we had a real reputation so I never got challenged outright...

Cool story. Yes you do lose a lot when people get softer. Kinda like the modern generation. They've gotten softer too. With their wokeness and safe spaces.. With respect to violence... Nothing else. Funny thing is, his teacher, the great Riley Hawkins, was also really tough, but both men were kind, generous and showed great compassion and empathy. They just wanted to make sure you were ready. Ill tell you the story of how I got started lol:
I moved from New York City, was about 14 and figured I would be scrapping a bit being the new guy lol. I saw that the local rec center was starting a karate class, so I went in. I was greeted by Sensei Ben. Sensei had good size to him, being about six foot 3 or so, he had a kind smile and shark eyes lol. Soon enough he wanted me to spar with him to get a sense of my abilities... I had none really aside from being a scrappy kid. He beat the crap out of me... After we stopped I did not know what to make of it. We go sit down in the office and he smiles again and tells me I did great, encourages me to come back tomorrow... I am so confused but I come back
For the next days this was the routine. I have to see this through, I am getting pretty ****** up and all, but he keeps encouraging me! On that fourth day Sensei tells me: "before we fight today I am teaching you one technique to defend yourself, a front kick." He does and despite being beat up I do much much better... Afterwards, instead of his usual smile and encouragement, Sensei looks at me after and asks me with a somewhat serious expression if "I understand" and I actually do!
That day the beatings stopped and I learned what a crazy genius Sensei Ben was. When you are not hungry someone can feed you the nectar of the Gods and it does not matter... Take a hungry man and give him a cracker and that cracker will be ambrosia. Context was everything and Sensei imparted upon me how important it was to learn how to fight. Only by experiencing a darth of anything to fight back with was I going to learn how to fight when given the proper tools. This was the initiation, one had to appreciate this to be a member of a fighting club! Since that day I still have a respect and reverence for learning because it shaped my approach.
I also learned that Sensei has lost an eye, hence the shark eye lookmade him terrifying to fight with!
