  • The myth of Louis’ slow feet

Wisp mentioned it in a post but it really reminded me and I totally agree.

if you look at Louis’ weight distribution, he has very strong legs and lean powerful upperbody. His weight is distributed lower which is perfect for balance and boxing. It would be next to impossible for him to have “slow feet” being built like this, or at least very unlikely.

anyways, he actually has FAST feet, but the art of balance and precision sometimes less is more. Watch the background as he moves or watch him in fights requiring movement, all will see when it’s needed Louis fast feet.

the problem with casuals (I don’t mean to point fingers at ANYONE) but they tend to only notice things if they are obvious but the subtle things will only be noticed if pointed out.

Louis probably gets it the worst out of anyone. He’s an extremely polished and balanced fighter, his defense is so brilliant he simply stands in a certain posture and offers nothing to hit. However he is a common punching bag for casuals who get it totally wrong most of the time.

    - - Joe had educated, very efficient footwork that kept him balanced for his punches.

You would think so considering who trained him.

It seems silly to hear, when you look at what Louis achieved, with Chappie Blackburn training him, some 21st Century silly ass self proclaimed expert tell us his footwork was inefficient/ineffective. Just plain silly.

Comes down to technique or physical attributes, which go hand in hand or compliment eachother in boxing. Louis had great technique in his footwork, but the natural speed in his legs just wasn't there. It worked out fine for him in his era for the most part(untill he met Conn, Walcott, Charles etc) but becomes problematic if you start putting him in mythical head 2 head matchups.

Louis's foot speed is sometimes dazzling. A lot of people miss it--it is that fast.

Its totally is, he get written off in this department by the majority its crazy. He just hides his footspeed like a master. When he needs it, it’s there. And his build would indicate this as well. Bottom heavy people are rarely slow of foot. Ali, Pacquiao, Benitez etc

              - - Ali would’ve had his 100 yard times measured in HS that likely could be found in surviving school archives.

Jeffries reputed to be 10 sec flat.

AJ ran around a 10.5 100meter time, ie 110 yards.

We dunno Usyk’s Time, the way boxing should be…

His feet were smooth, efficient, and well trained.

                But they weren’t fast.

There is a conspiracy theory that ALL Louis films are doctored to run slow except at moment when he lets his hands go which explains his slow feet. Furthermore Louis is acting by shuffling his feet in a predictable manner and is also acting when he is knocked down in fights that he won. No one could fake being stunned as well as Joe Louis could ... so the conspiracy theory goes.

Now do you buy into that? Or as a Joe Louis fan will you prove your defensive skills ( I say Louis lacked defense ) by ducking the topic all together?

I like apples by the way.

Joe is not easy to hit at all. Nobody can take blow after blow to the head and remain coherent. Joe Louis like many old pros mastered the art of riding punches. However his best defensive asset was his blackburn stance. The angle, weight distribution if maintained provides almost nothing to hit even when he just stands there.

it’s important to remember, louis has hit the canvas yes, but he never was getting hit constantly or in volume.

most of his fights the oponent starts backing up right away once they get buffuddled by his stance offering no openings

but what you mentioned is exactly it and its brilliant. Joe would sell his slowness to hide his speed. This is actually what I meant but failed to explain it properly.

by virtue of his build, he’s very light and strong for his size and most of the weight is in his legs. This man could glide across the ring when he wants to.
