There is no evidence that Jeffries existed on tiny meals whilst training for Johnson,nor is there any references to that in Pollack's Jeffries bio 227lbs for a six foot man is definitely NOT underweight.Photos of Jeffries just prior to the fight show a 35 years old man in excellent muscular condition with a six pack stomach and a good covering of flesh over his ribs.
He had over a year to train for the fight and his diet was the same as it was for all his more important fights.
Sam Langford said," Jeffries was in good shape, if he wasn't he could never have stood the beating he took" .
For Jeffries to have done better he would have to have fought Johnson in1905/06 and God knows he had enough opportunities to do so!

As I have said Jeffries was down to weight and eating normally albeit keeping an eye on his weight, over six months before the fight.
This is confirmed in Pollack's excellent biography of Jeffries .
