London likely did not know of Johnson's dark side, and why would he? There was no intertnet research back then, or books written about the man doing bad things in his time like beating on women. Which other fighter did this? Can you name any more? I am sure there is more, and they are wife beating scum bags.
Slugfester take note: My point is: Wouldn't London, a journalist who was looking to discredit Johnson at every turn KNOW about Johnson's alleged transgressions? And yeah I agree. No internet back then, so how do you know? I don't think you do!

Everything Johnson did, once champion, was in the newspapers. The Lucille Cameron saga played out in the newspaper like the New York Post, Page 6.

She also took her own life and JJ announced his engagement to Cameron just a few days later. The newspaper jumped on his behavior and followed the couples (eventual mixed marriage) exploits for the next year.

I don't know if Cameron was abused or not durung this period (1912-1915). She would sue for divorce (mid 1920s) claiming abuse.

I know because it is written about them is and Johnson did hit his wife and beat his wife badly ... to an inch of her life. London probably did not know this when he wrote about Johnson. Any man who raises his hand to a women and beats on her is not a real man at all.

Ivich can list sicko's like Monzon all he wants. It does not absolve Johnson's behavior.

The point here is how to judge a man's actions within a context, specifically an ethical context... For example, I know you pulled the wings off of flies growing up... I also know that unfortunately pre adolescent boys often act cruelly towards creatures growing up. How bad was your actions compared to some general standard of conduct? Now lets take a sociopath who also is cruel to creatures: He ties the tails of cats together so they rip each other apart... we have actions that speak to more than the average cruelty one would see in that group.

Boxers and football players apparently hit their spouses a lot. It is one of those elephants in the room. Its not to be condoned... But one should have a sense of when actions involving these domestic issues are atypical or not. Johnson did what a lot of fighters do... It was not right, but it was not at a proven level that makes him stand out.

I'm no trying to absolve Johnson or anyone else's behaviour ,I'm stating it is not uncommon among boxers.

I'm also stating Johnson's conduct outside the ring has absolutely nothing to do with his ability as a boxer.
You however cannot talk objectively about Johnson as a fighter. How many times on this thread alone, have you talked about Johnson hitting his Wife and others outside the ring?
The thread isn't even about Johnson! You are hysterically deranged about the man! You should seek medical help!
Why don't you make a thread titled,
"Jack Johnson Was Scum," and post hate about him on it daily?

That way you won't infect everyone else's threads with your madness ? And we won't have to read the same garbage from you every day!

You're a laughing stock on the subject of Johnson here!

Lamotta is the worst from what I have personally read. His first wife he got so mad at for flirting with another woman he knocked her out cold, and she was still unconscious in the morning. him and his brother thought she was dead and they instantly started thinking about where to dispose of the body. She then eventually came around, and luckily didn't die.
