Was Hemingway the guy he is purported to be? I have heard a few, claim his claims, were wind. In particular his time in the ring.

Wills, Jeannette, Langford, Jeffries would, but not even some made up fantasy is ever gonna make JJohnson fight Louis or anyone he could beat by when champ, the reason he ducked Langford and Jeannette in Paree.

Blind Langford KOed prime Wills, so prime Langford could KO Louis, the reason I rate this a 50/50 fight. JJohnson avoided prime Langford like the plague.
Langford's eye troubles began on the 19th of June 1917 when, in a match with Fred Fulton in the 4th rounds he partially ducked a mighty right cross ,the punch landed on his left temple and left him with a damaged optic nerve.

Between rounds Sam asked his corner to attend to his eye, saying he couldn't see out of it,his corner said there was no swelling there, but Langford was blind in that eye,Langford came out for the 5th, but after that round he was virtually blind in both eyes for the next round. When Langford said he couldn't see Fulton and the tall mans left kept from getting in close the corner threw in the towel.
Langford his sight restored in one eye continued his career, fighting old opponent Wills another 7 times, but he not only never knocked him out ,he never beat him again and was stopped in 2 of those 7 fights!

Isn't this where I'm supposed to say."what grade you in?"lol

Why don't you spend some time actually learning about these men instead of just making juvenile comments that only result in you mugging yourself, and exposing your ignorance to the forum?

Indeed it is... which makes me wonder, which of Johnson's fights (if any?) he actually saw!

Hemingway claimed he was given boxing lessons by Young Ahearn. How good he was is open to conjecture.
In Africa he used to spar with native men but they had never seen a pair of boxing gloves before.
George Brown a former pro and boxing instructor said Hemingway was a strong and could hit,but slow and dirty.he said any good pro would slaughter him. Hemingway boxed on the beach with Tom Heeney.

Gene Tunney said he was having drinks with Hemingway one time, and Hemingway suggested they have ,"a friendly spar".During the "spar",Hemingway let go a full blooded punch that Tunney only partially blocked, annoyed Tunney feinted Hemingway into knots and fired a right cross that stopped just a half inch from Hemingway's nose.
Tunney then said to Hemingway,"never do that again!"
Hemingway's," Charlie Zelenoff ,"moment was over.
Jack Dempsey said Hemingway wanted to spar with him but Jack would never agree, knowing Hemingway's competitive nature,he knew he would haye to hurt the author to quiet him down and though Jack was ruthless on sparring partners,he found the prospect of really damaging a "civilian" distasteful.

He went to the fights when he could, did he ever see Johnson in action?Who knows ?
How many boxing writers who have written pages and pages on different champions ,confidently giving their opinions on them have actually seen them in the flesh?

Ivich is not interested the facts or the truth when is goes against his hero's. At least Louis was a hero. Jack Johnson a man who beat on women, assaulted the sick as wanted to be the only black champion AND avoided fighters such as Langford and Jeannette, not to name Gunboat Smith, Sam Mcvey, and Luther McCarthy were better than ANYONE Johnson beat as champion when they were in their primes during when he was lineal champion! Just like Marvin Hart and Joe Choynski were close to there primes when they beat Johnson!

Congratulations. You managed to get your daily dose of hatred of Johnson in !

Now please tell us the relevance of your post as it applies to my thread?

May I remind you and the other 2 Stooges one of whom has already made 2 ****** , totally inaccurate, and irrelevant posts, [the other is probably too busy posting about ******** in the Lounge] ,that this thread is about Hemingway's opinion of Joe Louis in 1935.
It is not an opportunity for you to dump on Jack Johnson.
If you want to do that have the decency to make your own threads on it!
Some posters here are trying to inject some new interest in this Forum.
The Three Stooges You , Queensbury Fool, and The Ghost Of Dempsey seem just to want to tear down fighters with spurious and wildly inaccurate BS. No wonder ESB Classic gets new members every day and this Forum is struggling!

Which ring? The square circle or the Bullfighter's picadilo? Sorry could not resist.

Teddy Roosevelt had a similar reputation as a Diato Ryu Aikijutsu man. He would set up a spar and was much more "spirited" than "good" lol, requiring many excellent Judo men among others, to figure out creative ways to not injure the president of the United States.
