  • Georges Carpentier?

I had some words about this fighter with a man on another site.Carpentier was the subject of a thread that was basically a fan letter.
My comment was." His record looks rather underwhelming to me".
Here I am talking vis a vis world class opponents.
Do you agree,or disagree with my assessment ?

    Carpentier's notable wins
    Jeff Smith W U Dec
    Battling Levinsky W ko 4
Gun Boat Smith W DSQ 6

One of the most outrageous decisions ever given in Great Britain ended the 'Gunboat' Smith - Georges Carpentier worlds white heavyweight championship fight abruptly in the 6th round in the Olympia Stadium last night when the American was declared loser on a foul. Smith dropped Carpentier with a right on the jaw, then wheeled around ready to administer the finishing blow. Carpentier started to get up on his knees but he lost his balance and dropped again. Smith's second blow barely grazed his head. As the American stepped over Carpentier's prostrate form, one of the latter's seconds jumped in the ring, but referee Corri waved him back, presumably with the intention of allowing the bout to proceed. Carpentier's manager Francois Descamps, however, sent several of his assistants into the ring. They lifted the French fighter up and dragged him to his corner. Corri then disqualified Smith and left the ring. More than 15,000 sportsmen who occupied the auditorium were bewildered at Corri's act and pandemonium broke loose. Smith's manager, James Buckley, declared Carpentier had disqualified himself by reason of the entrance of his seconds in the ring and insisted the Frenchman had succeeded in triumphing by an artful French trick." - Hammond Lake County Times

    Ted Kid Lewis W ko1
Georges Carpentier 175 lbs beat Ted Kid Lewis 157 lbs by KO at 2:15 in round 1 of 20
    • Date: 1922-05-11
    • Location: Olympia, Kensington, London, United Kingdom
    • Referee: Joe Palmer

The fight lasted 2 minutes and 15 seconds. Lewis was knocked down in the 1st round from a right hand and did not beat the count.

Georges Carpentier : 4 to 1 favorite Carpentier hit Lewis on the break, when Lewis turned to the referee to protest Carpentier ko'd him.

    Lewis was an overstuffed welterweight.

Carpentier feasted on English heavyweights, but they were not of the first rank.

Do you think I have been fair or harsh in my grading of his wins?

I've always thought he was overrated in boxing because of his status as a war hero.

I believe he was 34 /35? Not entirely done but no longer at his peak.
Matt is right, it was a fine performance by Carpentier ,but ."one swallow ,does not a summer make. "

'Boxing is a great game, despite its many detractors. Attack is only half the art of boxing. Skill is the other half. You must always be fit and ready when you take part in the sport. Preparation, dedication and direction would be the key. If you are going into boxing, you must put your own mind down to it, and have a bit of luck along the way too. The rewards can be very good. Even when my career ended, I always managed to keep myself fit. It's a habit, a routine you never really lose.'

                  - Georges Carpentier
