  • Jeffries did alright by Fitzsimmons

After Jeffries took down Ruby Rob the second time he kept him busy (paydays) with exhibitions.

    That's an OK guy.**

It looks like they did a little barnstorming together; taking on "all comers," Etc.

Then held some sort of clinic in Harpin Springs, California.

P.S. He also fought his brother Jack Jeffries and Joe Kennedy a hell of a lot. I mean a hell of a lot!

**Sullivan fought Paddy Ryan in an exhibition in New York just a week or two after beating him. Gave Ryan all the proceeds. (I think their championship bout had been winner take all.)

(Fight was police stopped midway through the first round. They were suspose to box an exhibition but couldn't hold back and started pounding on eachother. Cops stopped it, "prize fighting" was illegal in New York.)

    - - Exhibitions had considerably less loaded guns for hire in the corners than did regular fights, so, yeah, amen to exhibitions, plays, and even operas that offered steady employment with zero risk.

Fitzsimmons knocked out six men in one night. They were low level fights, not exhibitions.

Jeffries stopped Fitz on the 9th of June 1899
On the 9th of August 1900 Fitz stopped leading contender Gus Ruhlin in 6 rds giving Ruhlin a severe beating.
On the 24th of that month Fitz ko'd the other leading contender,Tom Sharkey in2 rds.
So ,in the space of two weeks Fitz had eliminated the other top contenders, and put himself up as the number one challenger.
After knocking Sharkey senseless, something Jeffries could not do in 45 rds of fighting in 2 attempts,Fitz leaned over the top rope and shouted to Jeffries who was ringside,"you'll give me a fight now ,won't you Jim?" "Get up and shake on it?" The crowd took up the request, and, after some hesitation ,Jeffries did so.
          The crowd applauded loudly.
Jeffries did give Fitz a rematch but unfortunately it was 2 years later, when Fitz was nearing 40.
Jeffries picking Ruhlin whom Fitz had half killed, for a title defence instead of Bob.
So did Jeffries do right by Fitz? I don't think so.
Given the belting Fitz inflicted on Jeffries in their second fight, cutting him above and under both eyes, and breaking his nose,it was probably smart of Jeffries to wait 2 years before taking on the 12 years older Fitz again,by which time Bobs hands had gone back on him.
That's my take on it anyway.
