Today Ring Annual ratings are archaic because they do countless updates during the year. Forever their Annual ratings would be published in the next year, ie Feb-March of 1998 in this case, ie for some 80 years straight before they figured out how ****** that was. You pop in their Ratings team then?

Man, I'd say you need Depends at both end as you don't know which end be sitting on your John.
    It doesn’t depend on anything.

He wasn’t ranked when they fought that’s a literal fact.

    • Joe has his fans, but the arguments put fourth on this thread as to why he is lacking are absolutely correct.

Yes at the end of 1997..

Not when they fought. When they fought he was unranked.

          These are objective facts.

            its quality > quantity

beating Fielding, Ryder, Plant, Benavidez, Smith, Yildrim, and Saunders puts Canelo ahead of Joe Calzaghe at 168

He fought mickey mouse opposition. Nobody cared about that WBO belt back then. His resume isnt close to Wards.

Froch wasn't worthy of a Calzaghe fight? And yet, somehow, fighters like Sobot, Giminez, Pudwill and Manfredo were? Further, re Lennox. He created his own "luck" by having Lurch continually run his face into his less-then-100% accurate punches. Its easy to say now that Vitali would have smashed him to pieces in a rematch, but history shows that when they met, Lennox won the encounter (and after that, during the post-fight interview, Larry Merchant trumped Lennox).

Revisionism is a powerful thing. For some.

That Lewis admitted that he ducked the rematch tells you a lot. He knew what was coming and wanted none of it. He was always happy to rematch after he lost the first fight, but was unwilling to give Vitali the same crack as he knew, without the very lucky eye cut, he loses to Vitali, who dominated the fight and was ahead on all of the cards. Meaning that Froch was not at the time an essential fight that Calzaghe needed to delay his retirement for him. Nash out

There's a plethora of names of Top 5 ranked fighters that he didn't fight and I've listed those fighters numerous times if you want to know who they are then go back and look or check the Ring Annual Ratings yourself.

In a 10+ year period at 168 he fought 2 fighters ranked in the Top 5, that is an objective fact and an embarrassing one at that.

There is not one great fighter in the history of boxing that you can say that about, not one. Calzaghe is not an exception to that rule.
He beat two HOF fighters far. Kessler was in his prime was outclassed. He might make the HOF, as he recently retired and three running out of fighters to anoint.
