Fraizer had wins had before that. Its not like it was a Buster Douglas situation.
I was thinking the same thing. He had cleaned out most of the top 10 before than. And his third fight with Ali......the grit and determination he showed was the epitome of an all time great, even in a losing effort.

Yes he had wins, but only one against a great fighter
Against fine wins over;
Ellis
Quarry
Bonavena
And to a lesser extent
Chuvalo
Ramos
He has defences over 3 unranked journeymen Ziggy,Stander,Daniels.
Some ranked guys he missed when a contender/champion would include'
Terrell
Patterson
M Foster
Norton
Jones
Garcia
Urtain
Clark
Shavers
Cooper
Liston
Lewis
Peralta
Mildenberger
Clark
Roman
His record against great fighters is 1-5.
Take that wonderful win out, and is he then an ATG?

No he's not. His career is largely defined by the Ali win which is arguably the best win in not only heavyweight boxing history, but boxing history.

Mickey Ward and Arturo Gatti showed grit and determination ,neither were great fighters let alone ATG's.

Perfect example of the dialectic of opinion when a fighter's greatness is revisited. Ellis was probably better than most people realize, Frazier was not his best version when he fought Big George... although its a major assumption to use this as an excuse for his efforts. Frazier beat some excellent fighters and that is more than some great heavyweights did resume wise. And of course... the Ali trilogy!
