Johnson's purse for the Jeffries fight was $75.750 ie 75% of the total purse in all he took home $120,000 for that fight.
Johnson got just £3000 to challenge Burns.
Burns set the bar with his$30,000 demand to defend against him.
Johnson's purse for Moran was $35,000 which was tied up in a legal wrangle.
Pollack states Johnson got just $5000 for his fight with Battling Jim Johnson but he was broke and desperate for cash.

You seem a little confused here?
    - - Nah, U rattlin' a few BBs ain't enough to understand JJOhnson has a legal agreement with the national sporting club who most certainly would've sweetened the deal.

He sailed straight for Vancouver and the States instead. Burns had made himself a star by then. JJ was always a stinker, and without Jeff and Jack London would be just a trivia question on a TV Panel show.

He won it all he had a right to run to Vancouver and sit on his throne and make them come to him. He just forgot there for a moment he was Black and it was about to get difficult.

He was part of the first 'fight of the century' -- without the white hate he generated we would have had to wait a bit longer for prize fighting to become culturally 'important' and maybe instead it goes the way of wrestling in the 1920s?

I think the key to all of this is he was the one who got Burns to fight him. Why didn't Jeannette, Langford, and McVea chase Burns to Australia?

They wasn't financed by the Brits. Cost a lot of $$$ to sail to Europe, and infinitely more for OZ.

OK so you're arguing that he owed the Brits when he ran off to Canada?

He signed to fight Langford in1907 for £3000,After winning the title in1908 he thought he was worth more. The National Sporting Club was notorious for its *****rdly purses.

Now I'll flip my opinion back again - he should have taken off for Vancouver. LOL

But how did he get to Australia, did the SC spring for his passage?

A 3000 pound payday (Around $8000 in Yankee money ???) isn't enough, they should have made a better offer.

If that's the deal I'm pro-champion here; get him the big payday or pay them back for their boat ticket.

                - - JJ reputedly signed an agreement to return to defend against Langford.

Think of black fighters being frozen out and suddenly JJ defends vs Sam. Would've completely reset the history and opportunities of boxing save for JJ feeling fainting goat in his moment.
