The Dempsey v Tunney long count knockdown is still argued today.

LaMotta being knocked down by Nardico, for the first and only time in his 106 fight career. The knockdown came during his 102nd fight against a light heavyweight.

Joe Louis getting caught by Two Ton Tony Galento is probably one of the more surprising knockdowns in boxing history.

A few years back I was working out at Mickey Ward’s gym in Lowell MA. His brother ****ie Ecklund was there all time, training fighters and telling war stories to anyone who would listen. To this day he still talks about the time he knocked down Ray Leonard and insists he didn’t trip.

Was just getting ready to write that one, good call.

        Any opinions?

        Rules:

The KD didn't end the fight; fallen fighter had to get up and continue fighting. (The fallen fighter can be KOed by a different blow, just not that one.)

How the KD affected the fight is in; how it affected either fighters' legacy is in.

Holmes was huge-hearted in that department. As a matter of fact, I still can't fathom how he got up from the first knockdown in the Tyson fight. Now, that was a spectacular knockdown... and the final knockout was even more dramatic. But the first KD is something else, just listen to the SOUND of that Tyson right.

Thinking again of more recent fights, an overlooked one might be Marco Huck vs Krzysztof Glowacki. If someone missed that one, please watch it. Great fight overall, with Glowacki getting up from a very hard knockdown to win.

Very good picks, Pavlik was practically out there.

Another one coming to mind: John David Jackson about to close the show against Jorge Castro, countered by a Hail Mary and crashing down hard. He does get up, only to be floored twice more and get stopped.

Na, you need to move this one over to Flick's Underrated Knockouts thread.

Yea, he gets up but 'continued fighting' is a bit of a stretch. lol

Great clip though. Thanks for posting.

                  - - JD fought as perfect fight, a beatdown as could be had with no opponent in worse shape than Castro who's one of my fav fighters for just this night.

Last I heard of JD was when Kov switched trainers. Seems like a trainer with boxing nuance and enough experience that he should be highly sought after. Any news?

He's training Claressa Shields, but at the moment I am not recalling any other major fighter currently under his guidance. I'll have to look up.

Was a fan of both of these guys (especially Pavlik). So much so, that a few months before they fought each other they were on the same card on HBO; on that night my wife started to go into labor with our first son. I told her she had to wait to go to the hospital until after the fights were over.

I think this is one reason why my son became such a big boxing fan.
