  • George Foreman dodging Jerry Quarry?

I was reading up on Jerry Quarry today, and came across this article.

    http://knowledgerush.com/kr/encyclopedia/Jerry_Quarry/

At one point it reads: "George Foreman refused to give Quarry a title shot, and said in later years he purposely dodged Quarry." Has anyone else heard anything like this before? I'm not exactly sure why Foreman would doge Quarry. Jerry Quarry was a good fighter, but I'm pretty sure Foreman could have taken him.

There is a rumour that Quarry handled Foreman in sparring in almost embarrassing fashion for Big George.

Foreman stated in the 90's that he purposefully ducked Jerry Quarry (one of the top contenders at the time) but it may have been just out of respect for Jerry.

what a great fighter Jerry Quarry was, Quarry gave Ron Lyle his first pro defeat and also beat some very good fighters, he had a granite chin and i feel that was the reason Foreman ducked him, if he could not KO Quarry then he would have been in real trouble against a smart, fast counter-puncher of Quarry`s calibre.. Quarry took the best that Lyle could hit him with, he also took the best Ernie Shavers could hit him with before `bombing-out` Shavers in the opening round, Quarry seemed to excel against `Big Guys` he put on a boxing exhibition in hammering Buster mathis and also KOd 6ft 6ins undefeated Mac Foster who had a record of 24-0(24) Quarry also was good enough to out-box Floyd Patterson... Quarry was really good!... i have 27 fights in my collection of Jerry Quarry and he was great to watch with IMO his best fights being.
      Quarry v Joe Alexander
      Quarry v Tony Doyle
      Quarry v Billy Daniels
Quarry v Frazier (1) forgotten classic
      Quarry v Jack Bodell
      Quarry v Alex Miteff
      Quarry v Orbillo
      Quarry v Alongi
      Quarry v Foster
      Quarry v Spencer
      Quarry v Patterson 1 & 2

the list is endless Jerry Quarry was that good to watch and was my all time favourite fighter

I think so, i mean i cant see Quarry taking Foreman's best licks can you ? ironically i was watching Ali vs Quarry 2 last night.

Quarry was rocked off Ali's shots, i dread to think what would of happened if Foreman hit him without sparring gloves and head gear.

Why do you think Ali and Frazier were able to stop him then ? im not being sarcastic im asking your opinion as to why two lighter punchers( than Foreman) managed to stop him because i dont know much about Quarry outside of his 4 fights with Ali and Frazier.

Do you think it had something to do with him being more discouraged than hurt ? because whilst he looked rocked against Ali he looked frustrated throughout more than anything, and Joe Frazier keep coming at you and taking your best shots is enough to make anyone sick.

I'm not sure if Quarry was rocked by Ali. That just wasn't one of Quarry's better performances in my opinion.

Mostly cuts and he could also get discouraged. He was a bit inconsistent.

Against Lyle he absorbed Lyle's best punches. Quarry had a battle-tested chin in my opinion.

You know to me Quarry looks like one of those guys that has a good chin but he CAN be stopped because of how easy he is to hit, a bit like De Witt or Lopez against Sanchez, Margarito vs Mosley.

IF you can keep hitting them consistently they will go and all that.

Quarry had a chin made of granite, his losses to Frazier & Ali was due to "CUTS" Quarry v Frazier (1) was Ring Magazine Fight of the year (a forgotten classic)..you are vastly underestimating Quarry, he was good enough to out-box Floyd Patterson and tough enough to with-stand the bombs of Lyle, Shavers and Mac Foster, all of who hit just as hard and are as big as Foreman.. who else took care of Shavers the way Quarry did ? who else handled Lyle and Mathis as easily as Quarry did? ... like him or not Jerry Quarry was a `class act`

The guy who said Quarry out boxed Patterson must have been high on something when he watched those fights.

He lost the first fight to Ali on cuts, but the second fight got stopped because he was being dominated, the final punch was a left hook that had him stumbled.

Relax im not saying he had a poor chin, he might of had a granite chin i dont know because i dont know much about him outside of his fights with Frazier/Ali.

Like him or not ? i got nothing against the guy so WTF.
