jack dempsey and beet rains???

hey guys, i saw the movie dempsey and i know movies arent always the most truthful...but in the beginning him and his brother are on the farm and they talk about him using "beat rains" to make the skin on his face tougher...at least thats what is sounded like he said...it was in a water form...is there any truth to this
