whoa that shot in ....round eight? (i think) the left hook that twisted duran around and nearly KD' him

that would have dropped nearly any middleweight besides guys like hagler and robinson

One of my favorite fights of all-time!

Duran was a virtuoso that night. Can anyone imagine Floyd or Jose Luis Castillo trying to go up and beat Jermain Taylor a few years back? It would have been the equivalent of this. They would have failed.

Barkley was more of a Super Middleweight than a Middleweight. Duran showed that skill and a little courage beats brute strength. Great great performance.

Funnily enough though, that was by far Barkleys best ever performance. He fought the perfect fight that and also fought the perfect fight for how a strong puncher should fight. He worked very well behind the jab all night and used constant combination punching to the head and body as well as good movement to the side, in and out, and a solid defense. Great, great fight by Barkley. Honestly, he would have beaten any other fighter that night and many middle-weight champs in history as well.

I love the counter shot that Duran lands in the first round at the end. Barkly leaves a jab out just a little too long and Duran shoots one of his signature counter shots over it. A beautiful straight right that very nearly put Barkly out then! Certainly staggered him though. You could see Duran setting the trap to shoot that right all night. What an amazing fighter he was! A guy that started at feather-weight fighting the strongest, most brutal middleweight of the time in Barkly and winning. It's really quite incredible. It's very hard to imagine any of todays fighter doing anything similar. Actually, it's hard to imagine any fighter doing anything similar.

Even more interesting was that he was never even a really big lightweight. He was just a typical sized lightweight. He rarely out-sized his opponents and was even the smaller guy quite often. I mean he was no Diego Corrales or something. Incredible.

Anyway, great fight. The combination that puts Barkly down in the eleventh is pure beauty to watch along with the many right hand counters he sets up. Great stuff.
