Dempey did beat the hell out of him tho, but after that he lost to Tunney twice. who besides Willard did he beat to earn an ATG stamp? He didnt fight Sam Langford or any of the top blacks during his "reign". but yet he is consistently rated as a top 5 HW. i may be far of bases with this. so would someone please educate me?
** You are so scattered that it's hard to know where to start.

    1. Dempsey has many substantial, dramatic wins over HOFers. Might help to review Boxrec and then the IBHOF.

    2. Jack Johnson was laid out cold by Willard. Fight available on utube, and today the KO would be a highlight on par with Berbick/Tyson and Zab/KT.

    3. Yes, Jack lost to HOF great Tunny twice at the end of his career. Better than losing to Leon and Butterbean.

    4. Sam Langford was not a "top black" heavy during his reign. Kid Norfolk was the top black lightheavy, Harry Wills the top black heavy, and Larry Gaines the top British Commonwealth heavy (Canadian, who seldom fought in the states, though was Dempsey's sparring partner for a while along with other "top black" heavies, sans Wills)

    5. You have to prove that you can be educated.

Any white fighter that's half way decent is always labeled as great. LOL Lewis and Tyson would have slottered Dempsey and Marciano, but they're always ranked below them. What a shame.

** Easy to say Lewis and Tyson would have slottered Ali and Holmes, but also always ranked below.

      And your obliterated point is?

No, that's not easy to say at all. And your point is?

** Oh, it's very easy for me to say. Guess I got you slottered.

You guys can argue all you want, but in the end there is no way to know what boxer would beat another boxer from a different period. I also don't know if the rankings of heavyweights are based on race.
The fact was in Jack Johnson's time, for example, he wouldn't have fought all the top fighters. That would affect his ranking but his being black would not change our modern rankings.

Because ATG lists are not based on how fighters would do head to head, smart guy. I'm not sure what slottered means (possibly that you should have completed the 5th grade,) but those lists are based on resumes, dominance, historical significance, among other things.

Giving me bad karma because I make you look ******, how sweet.

Excellent post London! Dempsey was the first universally accepted sports superstar. And whenever you thought of the 'Real' Heavyweight Champion you thought of Dempsey. I'd give Lewis at best four rounds in there with Dempsey cos once Dempsey throws those 12 gauge ******* hooks to Lewis' shaky chin he's outta there. Lewis might absorb two or three at best and the other 30??? Tyson is a great fighter going forward with good head movement and punching in bunches but is at his most vulnerable when resistance is fierce and Dempsey was a fierce fighter being right in there throwing them. Jack Johnson came from a pre-combination era (until Mickey Walker came along) where there was incessant clinching and only single punches thrown.

Jess Willard was the betting fav against Dempsey. so dempsey was also the underdog in the fight.
