Liston demolishes Albert Westphal in a warm-up match to his title challenge against Patterson.
I bet Patterson didn't feel too good about his chances after watching that one.

Patterson was a game lad though. He went in for a re-match despite the outcome of the first.

Yes he is one of my favorites. Patterson was down more times than any other heavyweight champion but got up more times than any other champion too.

Although he was a little under-sized he could still compete with the best heavyweights of the 50's, 60's and 70's. He made up for it with his speed, skills and courage.

Courage is getting beat up two times in the first round by Liston and challenging him to a third rematch even though it was obvious he had no chance.

Possibly, but there have been different theories on this.

A doctor of Liston's said he was scared of needles, but other people said he was a heroin user and that he used needles frequently to get high.

Another theory is that he was ready to spill the beans about fights he may have gone into the tank for (Ali?) and was killed because of that. Also, another theory is that he was killed for trying to muscle in on someone's drug turf.

The sad thing about him, his real date of birth is unknown, the real date of his death is unknown, and the real cause of his death is unknown.

There was a good documentary on Sonny Liston I recommend if you have not seen it.

If Sonny were living today and fighting in his prime, I think he would be much more loved by the public than he was in the 1960's. He would be happy to see how much support and how many fans he would have. At least that way, the man could have had some happiness. I read his biography and it was said that Sonny never really felt loved or trusted many people. I feel sorry for the way his life was lived.
