If Tyson would have beat Buster Douglas and his confidence kept growing he could have gone on to be the best. He was never the same after that fight. He was winning too easily and got to complacent and thats what lead to his downfall

I disagree, and think the loss to Douglas was actually beneficial, as you could see in his next few fights before going to prison. He actually showed heart, and he fought like he wanted to have a gameplan for winning. (See: Ruddock 1 & 2)
Cus did everything he could do. The question should probably be directed towards Rooney and the guys who had him after D'amato's death. I, for one, would never have let him get involved with Don King or Robin Givens. Telling a 20-something kid that he is invincible probably didn't help, either.

I think Cus should have been more disiplined with Mike, and showed him that he couldn't just do anything he wanted and get away with it, also I agree with Brassangel in that after his death, those people that told him he was invincible really didn't help, I think though that Tyson's main problem was always self confidence, he never had any, so when he came up against someone that didn't just roll over and stood up to him, he always just wanted out. At 14 in an amatuer fight he was pounding this guy who kept getting up, Tyson never liked this and in the corner between rounds told Atlas he was injured and wanted out, Atlas just ignored him and told him to go back out and carry on doing what your doing, again after the end of the 2nd he kept making excuses for trying to get out of the fight, he went on to win a decision, but I think that says a lot about the character of Tyson, he should have had all the confidence in the world, but when people stood up to him he never liked it,and always wanted out, though he always took his punches like a man and never quit, maybe he thought he deserved a beating, who knows what went through this complexe mind of his. He never really really dug as deep as he could of to win a fight that wasn't going his way, he just lacked that mental toughness and win at all cost attitude of Holyfield.

Rooney used to program Mike into believing that his opponents were his enemies, but in the competitive sense. He would study their films, watch their fights, and deconstruct them scientifically. Cus gave him his style, and a father figure. Both men kept Mike training all the time, without long breaks to balloon into a fat, careless heavyweight (like he did right before his fights with Bruno, Williams, and Douglas).
Mike was told he was invincible by King and that crew of losers. They also told him, "Hey, you're the heavyweight champion of the world! You can have anything and anyone you want!" If Cus and/or Rooney could have done anything to keep Tyson away from those characters, he would have stood a chance.
