Bert cooper would have been a big win for dempsey. Gunboat smith is a chump, the fact that he was a big win is what makes it laughable.
Bert Sugar rates Dempsey as #3 all-time in the Heavyweight division (in 1991 he rated him #1) and #9 pound for pound.
Back when he was boxing, not too many people wanted to get into the ring with him. The only thing I have against Rating him high is that he ever fought a Black boxer. After Jack Johnson, most promotors would not here of it, so I can't blame Dempsey.

The fact is Tunney was a far bettter boxer than Holyfield was and all anyone has to do to see this is watch the footage. I actually am a big fan of Evander Holyfield and loved his passion for the sport and his never say die attitude; but that doesn't mean I'm going to buy into any grandiose post-modernistic bs that he was better than all who came before him. I think he was the greates cruiseweight of all time and feel p4p he was above exceptional...and had the biggest, or one of the biggest hearts ever. However, Holy had a sub-par defense and was not as technically astute as Tunney nor Charles. He might have done better in an era with smaller heavies, so, I'm really not taking anthing awaw from him...he's a solid Top 15 World Heavyweight Champ...but I can't put him in the top 10 in good conscious.

If you want to keep a white guy in ur top 10, go ahead i have no problems with marciano being top 10 but to suggest dempsey is better than holyfield is just laughable, he was good for 5 years, oh my god!
