  • Jimmy Ellis-why did he move up to hw?

The man started as a mw, why da hell did he go where he didn't belong? At least stay at lhw! He had fine technical skills, one of the best of the 60's hw's really. But was no match for Smokin' Joe's fistic fury and power or Ali's relentless speed.

Moving up is not always a choice. There was no cruserweight division in those days. A fighters weight/size( more times than not) increases as they get older. It goes along with the myth that Duran was a lightweight his entire career. Patterson was a middleweight his entire career..........

everyone gets bigger and has to move up eventually....

but duran shoulnt have gone up to mw i meen he had success there but he should have come into his fights at like a fit 150ish.....

at ww though he looked like he was lean and filled out.

patterson was a hwprobsbly could have made 1705 if he tried though.

Weight gain aside, the heavyweight division has always been more lucrative. Look at Chris Byrd! Even guys like Moorer and M. Spinks had no interest in the cruiserweight division and left the light heavyweight division for the money. Better money for even the journeymen.

Ellis moved up for the money, just like every other lightheavyweight who has. There is no bigger gap in money between any two divisions than lightheavy and heavy. Ellis made more money in his fights with Ali and Frazier than he would have in 30 lightheavyweight title fights.

And although it would have been a good match, Ellis wouldn't have beaten Bob Foster at 175 either.

Dundee convinced that Ellis would be better off fighting at heavyweight, and he was right. Ellis won a heavyweight title and beat some very good fighters. Coming second best to Ali & Frazier doesn't mean he had no success.
