  • Don't Forget: UFC Ultimate Fight Night saturday

If you’re a mixed martial arts fan, this is your month. There are more special events, weekly shows and pay-per-views for fighting sports than ever before. And with millions of potential viewers tuning in to Ultimate Fight Night on Spike TV, more diehards and new fans will be watching Saturday night than numerous recent UFC pay-per-views put together.

Many fighters from TUF season one are in the cage for Ultimate Fight Night in addition to some returning veterans. It seems that, eventually, Zuffa gave just about everyone on the show a contract and not just the winners.

One could easily say that move was more about money and cashing in on the athletes’ exposure than a commentary on their individual talents. But I don’t begrudge them their opportunity. MMA athletes have been underpaid for too long so if these guys can get the contracts, more power to them.

However, fighters not on the TUF show that have busted their tail in rings and cages for years to establish themselves have to be scratching their heads about now. I guess the only way to look at it is to realize someone had to lay the groundwork so others could succeed.

Guys with names like Severn, Taktarov, Hackney, Johnston, Goodridge and Ruas who are not the household names but are beloved by true MMA fans, had to open the door to guys with names like Quarry, Florian, Leben, Hoger and Bonnar.

The eight-bout card is a good one. It features a pair of TUF veteran vs. TUF veteran bouts, and four other reality show veterans taking on Octagon veterans.

The free television card is highlighted by a contender’s bout in the middleweight division, as rising UFC star Ivan Salaverry battles former King of Pancrase Nathan Marquardt.

The entire event breaks down as follows:

Jiu-jitsu stylist Drew Fickett from Arizona Combat Sports tests Striker Josh Neer.

Chris Leben of Team Quest goes toe-to-toe with Team Union fighter Patrick Cote.

Team Quest wrestler Nate Quarry and Serra Jiu-Jitsu fighter Pete Sell let’ em fly in the Octagon.

American Kickboxing Academy fighter Josh Koscheck confronts Team Janjiri Muay Thai fighter Pete Spratt.

Mike Swick of American Kickboxing Academy combats Gideon Ray of Hackney’s Reality Combat.

Jiu-jitsu fighter Kenny Florian meets Alex Karalexis of the South Shore Sport Fighting gym.

Stephan Bonnar of the Carlson Gracie Team and Sam Hoger of Miletich Martial Arts take to the ring.

AMC Pankration fighter Ivan Salaverry faces Colorado Stars fighter Nathan Marquardt, who is making his UFC debut.
