  • Prime Royce Gracie vs Prime Matt Hughes

I think Hughes still takes it. Too physical.

There's been a thread on this before I think. But anyhow, I always went for Hughes. It's real simple to me. At the time royce was in his prime he only knew BJJ and the guys he was fighting knew one discipline as well. Royce has never been the best BJJ player but due to the competition he was facing he looked amazing. Not to mention they (Royce's opponents} weren't anywhere near the athlete that Matt was in his prime. I think it would be no different than their actual fight they had at UFC 60. Matt via TKO.

I see Matt Hughes beating him up in his close guard en route to a unanimous decision.

LMAO.We are talking about a guy that got tooled twice in a total of just 38 seconds by a mediocre Dennis Hallman. It's fashionable for these so called fans to discredit Royce Gracie and all he accomplished now that he's shot and old,but they can't ignore the fact that Hughes was tapped twice by a guy who didn't know half of what Gracie knew.

Gracie would tap farmboy out inside of one round.

Have the mods here not heard of an IP Ban?

Anyway, Prime Hughes is post Hallman, and Prime Gracie still doesn't know enough about anything other than Jiu Jitsu to beat prime Hughes...

                What's the matter,mate.....got no class?

Anyway,Hughes wasn't far away from his prime when he lost to Hallman the second time.Hughes just can't deal with these ground guys.

How much better was "Prime" Gracie than the Gracie that got mauled by Hughes? Also, lets forget all about that he's beaten BJ Penn, GSP, Verissimo, Serra, and Newton x2. All those dudes suck at BJJ! It's probably better to ignore the fact that he has won almost 50% of his fights by submission too. Quit hating, quit trolling, and move on...

The TS asked for Prime vs Prime not almost in his Prime vs Prime, they're 2 different things altogether.

A couple of losses to Hallman doesn't mean he can't handle ground guys. Verissmo, Castillo, Newton, Doerksen, Penn, Serra and Menne are all submission specialists who Hughes has beaten. He made a rookie mistake in the first fight and was too eager in the second fight. Like Kaps said, look at who he has beaten since those losses and what he has achieved, it speaks for itself.

And if you still believe that Matt can't handle ground guys then I put to you that Royce never proved that he could handle anyone with well-rounded skills. He was content to dine out on his UFC record with wins over guys who knew nothing about BJJ. Royce was smart enough to realise that after his rematch with Shamrock that guys were beginning to cross-train and the UFC wasn't catering to his family's style anymore and once they started to change the rules (most notably the stand up rule when there is lack of action) he along with his family left for PRIDE where he could make up his own rules for his matches. Then when he couldn't change the rules anymore at PRIDE he jumped to K1. Royce has a padded record with the only decent wins being Severn and Shamrock. The rest of his wins are non-achievers and Akebono.
