  • De La Hoya/Hopkins a PPV success

HBO Sports reported today that 1 million pay-per-view buys and $56 million in pay-per-view revenue was generated from last Saturday's undisputed world middleweight championship fight featuring Bernard Hopkins and Oscar De La Hoya at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was promoted by Top Rank, Inc, and Golden Boy Promotions in association with MGM Grand Hotel & Casino.

In a fight which ranks 2nd only to De La Hoya vs. Felix Trinidad (Sept. 1999) on the all-time non-heavyweight pay-per-view charts, Hopkins and De La Hoya squared off with four world title belts on the line in their highly anticipated showdown.
The 1 million buys consisted of 600,000 buys from cable systems and 400,000 buys from satellite homes throughout the 50 states.

Oscar has now participated in each of the top four non-heavyweight pay-per view events in history -including the record-setting 1.4 million buys in the Felix Trinidad fight of Sept. 1999; the Sept. 2003 rematch with Shane Mosley, which generated 950,000 buys; and the Sept. 2002 showdown with Fernando Vargas, which registered 935,000 buys.

The Hopkins vs. De La Hoya undisputed world middleweight championship fight will be replayed this Saturday night, September 25th at 10:15p.m. ET/ 7:15 p.m. PT on HBO. The fight will be paired with the live telecast of the world light heavyweight title fight featuring Roy Jones Jr. vs. Glen Johnson from Memphis, marking HBO's launch of World Championship Boxing events in high definition television.

The doubleheader will be replayed on HBO2 Sunday, Sept. 26 at 10:00 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 11:35 p.m. The times on the 26st and 28th are ET/PT.

Was there any doubt? I'm surprised it was the biggest non-heavyweight event either. That's what the goal was I'm sure.
