In the midst of the crisis caused by the outbreak of the coronavirus COVID-19, Puerto Rico's Félix "El Diamante" Verdejo decided to stay in Las Vegas where he had traveled several weeks ago to start a camp despite not having any fight on the agenda.

For now, the 26-year-old boxer will continue working the physical part in his apartment, under the orders of his coach, Cuba's Ismael Salas, since the gyms had to close in recent days by order of the Nevada government, in order to prevent further spread of this virus. As of yesterday, 95 cases had been reported in Nevada.

"My understanding, based on the last thing that I discussed with Felix Verdejo's team, is that he will stay in Las Vegas training (in his apartment)," Top Rank spokesman Gardy Lopez told John Sanchez.

López said he told Verdejo's team that Top Rank was going to postpone all of their events in March and April due to the emergency with CODIV-19, in the event that they wanted to return to the island.

"Felix has no fight date scheduled. We have already postponed our events in March and April, but Felix and his team made the decision to keep training in Las Vegas to be ready when a possible fight date arises," explained López.

Verdejo comes from achieving a victory in his last fight, when on January 18 he defeated Mexican contender Manuel Rey Rojas by unanimous decision in a lightweight fight, after a nine month stint of inactivity.

The Puerto Rican improved his record to 26-1 with 16 knockouts to add his third victory in a row, after suffering the first loss of his career against the Mexico's Antonio Lozada in March 2018.

Verdejo, who debuted as a professional in 2012 as one of the sport's biggest promises, has yet to fight for a world title.
