The World Boxing Council has approved a bout for the WBC interim-featherweight championship between Robinson Castellanos (21-10, 13KOs) of Mexico and Colombian contender Oscar Escandon (24-2, 16KOs).

Escandon was scheduled to face WBC full featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. next Saturday night in Las Vegas. The fight was called off after Russell suffered a cut and withdrew from the bout on Monday.

Castellanos is the mandatory challenger after winning the silver title in January with a decision over Rocky Juarez.

The negotiations will be interesting with Escandon being an Al Haymon-advised boxer and Castellanos promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. There is an ongoing lawsuit between Golden Boy and Haymon.

There has not been a mandatory defense of the WBC championship in a long time and the sanctioning body wants the flow of the division to continue while Russell recovers from his injury.
